  • Stromberg guts...Correct bits for the A-75 vs A-65?

Okie dokie, since I have the carb off N43319, just want to confirm a few things. Last fall I researched the heck out of this, after consulting my spec sheets, manuals, online sources etc. etc. I had everything written down and now can't find my notes at the hangar.

We were going through my brother's Pober (also has an A-75)...I had an extra carb that had been gone through, sealed up and put away that was jetted and venturied for an 85. I have a big box of carb stuff so we changed the venturi, jet and air bleed to the proper ones. Everything I found directed using the same bits as an A-65 for the A-75. If memory serves correctly I'm referring to a 1 1/4" venturi, a No. 49 metering jet, and No. 65 bleed air. That's how we set it up.

Now, a couple of days ago I was visiting a few "old timers" at another aerofield...these guys have an awful lot of wrench and stick time and they are reasonably intact bodily, always a good sign. During our discussion all three concurred that the "A" series book is incorrect and that you need to use the Stromberg specs for the [B]C-75[B] when setting up a Stromberg for the A-75. When I mentioned that seemed a wee bit off since the C-75 is a very different engine of larger displacement, their reply focused on me going to get them more donuts since I had questioned their vast mental database of aeronautical knowledge.

So...I thought I'd again go to the well of T-craft lore and ask here. I have 1 1/4", 1 5/16" and 1 3/8" venturis, different jets, etc., so my options are available... I can remember a few other sources I found regarding "using the "C-75" specs as correct for the "A-75" last year. As always, all comments, laughter, derision, etc. are welcome.

Its in the engine Type certificate for the venturi size, the A-65 through the A-80 use the small one (1.250) along with the right main jet and bleed. The overhaul manual also tells you what parts go with what combination. I rebuilt mine and when I put the larger venturi in, I had a stumble....stick with the book specs on this one. Dead stick landings are not fun when you are on a short final for a mountain ridge that is a saddle and you are committed...on an island in the great salt lake....without cell phone service....DAMHIK Tim

      Tim,

Yup....I used the small venturi...from what I see in my spec books either a No. 49 or No. 50 main and a No. 65 bleed air....same for the A-65 as the A-75. That being said I've heard and read several contrary statements and wanted to double-check here... As far as I can tell the 1.25" venturi go along with the aforementioned jets... I kinda expected bumping up at least a little for the 75 but that's not how I read things, at least for the "A" engines. So unless there's discordant opinions I'll confirm that's what is on the "T" and install a SS needle, using my handy-dandy float level tool to proper effect. Will be bench testing flow though. Just for the heckuvit I did that just now after pulling the top of the carb off. Through the drain plug it was 4.2 gph compared to 3.3 gph with same head pressure mounted in the aeroplane. Figured the flow would be a little quicker with exposed bowl. Trying to be wholly methodical for the sake of science this time.

Take a little baby powder with some grease or oil and lap in your needle and seat, or it will drip forever! I didn't do mine and regretted it. Until I went to the Marvel in the big engine.... Tim
