I don't really care if I gain cruise or not. Take-off from unimproved fields is what I want. I have so enjoyed the 85 hp and the electric is so nice. Especially when on skis.

I have crispy critter(my taylorcraft) approved with an 0200 on a stock short mount with 1280 gross. It is a one time STC, took me an act of congress to get it approved the first time, but since then 2 of my friends have used it as previously approved data to do it to theirs and was approved with no problem. Your welcome to a copy if you like. You might even talk with terry to get help with approval.

As for the long mount, I don't recommend it unless you want to go up to 1400 gross. It really does change the way the airplane flies completely. Before you decided to install the long mount(unless you already had it to start with) go find someone who has a long mount taylorcraft and get a ride. They are still sweet but no where near the same airplane. Sme people like what it does to the handling and some people don't.

I'm curious how the long mount changes the flying characteristics? Also what the climb, takeoff and cruise is like with the O-200. I know what it's like to have a C85 v the 65

      Thanks,

        Re: 0200 into a BC12-D?

The long mount moves a BIG mass further from the CG. What happens from a physics point of view is the rotational moment of inertia increases. Same as the spinning ice skater with arms in to arms out. She slows down because even though the weight (mass) didn't change, the rotational moment of inertia did.

For an aviation example look at a Fokker Triplane with that REALLY short nose and relatively massive rotary engine next to a SPAD with it's V-* engine with it's hevier weight further forward. Even with the extra power to weight ration and wing area, the Triplane was MUCH more nimble. Moving the engine weight forward, even when preserving the CG puts more weight further from the center of rotation and the "lightness" on the controls is VERY noticeable.

When I worked on the F-14 we went so far as to move the power supply for the fin tip lights to the base of the fin instead of next to the lights as designed originally just to remove some moment of inertia. It actually increased the fatigue life of the fin attach fittings SIGNIFICANTLY. A little weight increase (or decrease) on a long moment arm can have a BIG effect. Another reason with all other things being equal (which they rarely are), a biplane will roll faster than a monoplane, and why biplanes dominated acrobatics for so long.

          Hi tribe,
I have been flying this BC12D with the long mount for 35 years and I guess I don't know any difference. ( I am too old to change) The 85hp with my present prop gives me a very good climb speed and I usually cruise between 95 and 100 mph at 5.5 gph. I really don't want to reinvent the wheel by changing the mount and radically altering the W&B from the present. If I can't find a good 85 crank I will resort to the 0220 crank STC from Don Sword. I just saw a rebuilt crank on EBay with .020 rod and mains undersized. I need to check the availability of those and then I will be in good shape. Does anybody know if that is a common undersize that can be purchased? I will make calls tomorrow it looks like.

Someone want to know if a B&C starter would fit with the short mount and a 0-200, Well here it is and works great.

The taylorcraft would have probably evolved into something like the supercub if it had not gone broke. 65 hp on a summer day doesn't get it. Same with the champ. My 85hp champ was ok, but nearly as much fun as a 150 hp Citabria which is basically the same airplane. An o200 on the taylorcraft would really help performance.
