  • Power Off glide tests

I took my BC12 D out and did a little "what happens if..."
I pulled the throttle back to idle and did a few glides at different speeds and this is what I got from a 60CSX handheld GPS
    Alt 30.11 Temp around 70F
    Tests 2K to 1K AGL
    min ctrl @ 3K
You'll see the info isn't very accurate at high decent rates and the numbers don't agree on the high ones (the decent rate was updated per second and the numbers were all over the place, I tried as best I could to pick the avg. but as you'll see I didn't do a very good job picking the right numbers, but here's what I got anyway.)
I tried to stay over the same spot doing this over and over again, but I could feel some thermal activity differ run to run.
I'll see if I can program this handheld for a 1 minute avg rate... if so I'll re-post with more accurate data

    100 MPH = 1200 FPM (7,330' per 1K Alt)... 90 MPH = 1100 FPM (7,200' per 1K Alt)... 80 MPH = 750 FPM (9,386' per 1K Alt)
    70 MPH = didn't write it down...damn!
    60 MPH = 500 FPM (10,560' per 1K' Alt)... is that right?
    50 MPH = 500 FPM (8,800' per 1K' Alt)
    42 MPH = 500 FPM (7,400' per 1K' Alt)

Yep, 60 is the best rate of glide!
