  • I'm looking to sell my 1946 BC 12-D Only 640 hours since factory new

    Hello everyone,

I'm toying with selling my Taylorcraft. It is a real fine machine with very low times. If any of the experts may have an idea what the market value really is these days I would appericate some feedback on a realistic price. It was completely rebuilt in 1993 to zero hours on the airframe,at that time it only had 289 hours since new. Engine has 330 SMOH. The plane is show quality in my opinion. I have all the original logbooks since new.

Thanks Guys, I really value all your input.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. It hard to determine value without them. The paint scheme can make a huge difference in value. Sex sells...!

      Dear 1946 ???,

About 12 years ago, when I was searching for a Taylorcraft, I learned that the area of the country influenced the asking prices. Until I became unemployed, this was not a big deal because I could jump seat to where ever I saw a good deal. I learned that the cheapest planes were in the Midwest, and there seemed to be more of them there. The most expensive planes were in California, especially the southern part of the state. Along the gulf coast they seemed to be fairly inexpensive also, but not as cheap as in the Midwest. These were only the asking prices, so keep that in mind. I am not sure what the reasons behind this geographical price difference were, but it became very obvious after just a short time searching. I suspect it was partially due to the number of buyers who were able to travel to the location of the aircraft. It stands to reason that buyers would be more willing to travel from the east coast to the Midwest to look at an airplane, verses travelling all the way across the country to the west coast. I also learned very quickly that travelling a long distance to look at an airplane was not cost effective. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I was going to buy a plane in Miami. The chief pilot of where I worked was going to let me bring it home in the belly of one of the cargo planes I was flying at the time. But the deal fell through and I ended up buying a plane from a guy at the local airport. I am mentioning this to make a point that even though you will get a lot of calls from ads in Trade-A-Plane and Barnstormers, the one who buys your plane will probably live within a couple of hundred miles of you. The best advertising is word of mouth. Take the money you would spend on ads and put gas in your plane to fly around to all the small airports in your area. Talk to flight instructors and anyone else standing around. Post an ad on the bulletin board. Seek out EAA chapters and CAP units and let them know too. Then wait. It takes time. Good luck.

The only thing I would say will modify what Richard said a little is people WILL go a little further to buy a plane from within their type club. I have seen several times in the Piper group, the Swift group and a LOT in the WACO group that people who are IN a group will go further to buy a plane from another group member. I think it is true because when you buy as a member of a group from someone with a history in the group you know what you are getting better.
That has been VERY true in the Taylorcraft group. We all know each other. We know each others planes. We help each other. If you want to buy or sell a Taylorcraft, this group is probably the best place to look. Almost everyone here would love to have another Taylorcraft on the field they fly from and when a plane comes on the market most of us go pass the word to friends that one of the "GOOD ONES" is available.

Must be the time of year for people to start thinking about selling airplanes I just posted mine on Barnstormers and in the For Sale section here.
Only to find this related thread had been started. I am open to any questions, thoughts, or suggestions concerning the aircraft. Price is negotiable within reason. I figured I had to start somewhere so I based the price on what I paid for it and figured in the cost of the strut and exhaust upgrades.

Thats an odd serial number. I looked up your tail number on FAA webpage and it shows your S/N is 9820. Where did the 5288268 number come from?

Thanks for catching that, you are correct on the SN#9820. I for some reason put the engine SN#.
