  • New struts are misaligned at the spar

    Robert

Changing the subject some, I started to change my Lift Struts today and found that the Factory set that D&E sent
from the Factory after Harry left do not fit, the angle at the wing attach point "FRONT STRUT" is wrong, the original appears to cante just a tad to the aft and the tang
on these new struts are straight as a result won't fit into the fixture

Have you see this or has anyone else had this problem
I can forward photos if I have a email address

    J Stallings
    Alva, OK

        Hi Jim
        How is all in Alva?

If you go here: http://www.airframesalaska.com/tcraftangle.pdf it will give you info on the strut angle problem.

James, I received your photos OK. I'll also remove your email address from your previous post...spam harvesters have a knack of hitching on to email addresses posted on internet forum threads.

I'll look at your three emails tomorrow, it's late here in the UK.

          Best regards,
          Rob

Re: Crack on A-A11 Strut Ftg

Lee, I got a reply from G Crookham, a old friend and associate from back in the Tulsa Days, and he directed me to a .pdf file posted from Alaska Airframes
on this angle issue and apparently, it has been an issue with other vendors before. These old airframes are not all the same and as Alaska Airframes mentions
one should measure and not angles of the front stut both sides as they can be different.

The communicate that to your parts supplier and verify the data

Tomorrow I will go to work on my options, but this info on the angles really turned the corner on my plight

Re: New struts are misaligned at the spar

OK, now having separated J Stallings' misalignment problem from the other thread, I can immediately see that the left & right wing spar fittings are different (one has the plate welded across the two fittings, the other doesn't.

I have seen several sets of wing fittings where, over the years, successive mechanics have "nipped up" the bolts between the two fittings to take up "slack" in a crushed spar, and I wonder if this is the case here?

Re: New struts are misaligned at the spar

It looks to me like one of the wings may have modified fittings as required for the 85 HP conversion (the one with the gusset plate), while the other has not. Still doesn't explain the different angles.

Has this aircraft been modified from 65 to 85 HP?
