Exactly! The difference between Sport Pilot and Private Pilot is a little bit of FLIGHT training. Yesterday I told my instructor that I was thinking about just getting my PP, then letting my medical lapse so I could do PM on my T-craft (thanks again for setting me straight on that 3D.) Nicest guy in the world, watches his P's and Q's and trains a lot of pilots. He used to work for the FAA, and he couldn't get his head wrapped around what I was trying to say. When he realized I wasn't going to give up on the fact that I couldn't touch my aircraft, he said he'd look into it.
The way I read the regulations if you are a sport pilot student and decide to go for the private pilot you now need a 3rd class medical to conduct solo flight even though you are flying the same airplane. I know it sounds kind of silly, but that is the way CFR 61.23 reads. Just some food for thought. Also make sure your instruction is with a 61 sub part "H" instructor so your time counts towards the private pilot rating.
This is just another example of how “disjointed” the regs have become. I would bet when the Sport Pilot regs were being developed, no one gave any consideration to other sections, like PM. Other than the statement that you must hold a PP to do PM, where does it specifically say a SP cannot do PM?.

43.7 (f): A person holding at least a private pilot certificate may approve an aircraft for return to service after performing preventive maintenance under the provisions of § 43.3(g).
43.3(g): Except for holders of a sport pilot certificate, the holder of a pilot certificate issued under part 61 may perform preventive maintenance on any aircraft owned or operated by that pilot which is not used under part 121, 129, or 135 of this chapter. The holder of a sport pilot certificate may perform preventive maintenance on an aircraft owned or operated by that pilot and issued a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category

I'll double check with him, but I would guess he's good to go on the instruction he's giving me. I'm the odd ball, he normally trains people going for their Private. I've got six years as a UH-1 mech./crew chief from my National Guard service. I'm going to ask around and see what the odds are I can get my A&P.
far 43 Appendix A (c) 6: (6) Lubrication not requiring disassembly other than removal of nonstructural items such as cover plates, cowlings, and fairings (oil is a lubricant )
and
43 appendix A (c) 23: Cleaning or replacing fuel and oil strainers or filter elements.
its all in how you read it!
Chuck and Matthew you guys are good!
FAA PAI confirmed for me that item #6 is the reason oil changes are PM.
