Well, it finally happened. My SF4 lunch boxes got very tired and after trying several sources for good parts, I struck out. Maybe there are good parts available, but after 6 months on the ground I relented and bought two used Slick 4333s. These magnetos had been on an Aeronca that had been used to turn a propeller into kindling, so off for an overhaul go the two magnetos.
The first thing you realize about the 4333 is that it can't use the same magneto gears as my Bendix SF4s. Definitely had to purchase the gears with these Slicks.
So Friday morning I mounted the overhauled Slicks. Standard routine here... turn backwards until the pin drops in the hole, stab the mag into the engine, pull the pin, timing light to fine tune, and hook up the harness. No problem.
But the engine won't start!
Oh well, it was a long down time on the engine and maybe I screwed up, so pull the mags off, inspect everything again, couple shots of MM oil to the accessory case and a squirt into each cylinder. Ok try again. Pin into hole, mag into engine, pin back out, harness onto mag, spark out the wires just to be certain the firing order is correct. All looks good. So go swing the prop.
Belches and backfires. Hmmm, a little more wrist into the swing. Woah! it starts and runs absolutely horribly! Bang, clatter, bang BANG. Shut it down!!. @#$%^&*(
I go home puzzled.
Today I get my old magneto and look carefully - right hand rotation -and yes, right hand rotation on the new Slicks. ????? Still puzzled, I try again to start the engine. Holy Mackerel! Big backfire, much smoke emanating from new (charred) Brackett filter element, dang neared pulled my arms out of their sockets. Snapped my neck too. Just damn. What is this.
Recheck the timing... right on 30 degrees. Pull the prop through slowly, listen for the dual impulse couplings and -- click AT 60 DEGREES BTC. #$%^&*(??????? No way this can be happening!
In desperation I open up one magneto and puzzle over it for a while when another A&P comes up and together we figure out that the internal timing on the freshly overhauled mag is 180 degrees out. Yow!
We pull out the distributor gear and place it in the correct position.
Re-install this magneto again. pin, stab, pin out, time, harness, plug wires. Now pull the prop through slowly with the switch off. At TDC we hear the wonderful sound --- CLICK.
Take second magneto to the bench and open it up. YES! It too is bass ackwards. Adjust the distributor gear and then pin, stab, etc....
One more time on the tie-down. Pull 6 blades, hear the squish, throttle 1/16 inch, mags both, --- and it starts on the first blade.
Two days work shot to heck to figure this out.
