  • Skylight

I want to put a skylight in my F21. I have all of the material to do it but I couldn't decide on how to finish up the inside. The F21 has a formed plastic headliner in two pieces that covers the entire interior including the baggage area. If possibe could any members with skylights post some interior pictures that might help me come up the the best solution? I thought of cutting the headliner and reforming it with heat to fill most on the void but bonce it cut, going back will be too late.

    Jim,

My suggestion would be to use the original headliner as a mold to make a fiberglass or carbon fiber replacement. Once you had a copy of it made, you could modify the copy to include an opening for the skylight. If you laid the original on a large flat surface with some sort of support under the middle, it would then support the weight of the fiberglass or carbon fiber on the top side. If you used some sort of mold release agent, you could probably keep the original in useable condition.

      Re: Skylight

I have the Clayton Skylight in my BC12d and I love it. It makes all the difference in visablity and light in the cabin. It is an STC sold by Mr. Clayton in Alaska, I do not know if he is still making the kits, But you could find out by giving him a call if interested, you can find him here by doing a search on skylights. My skylight takes up the entire roof of the cabin so there is no room any longer for a head liner, it goes all the way back to the baggage compartment. Not that difficult to install and my A&P endorsed its installation easily. As far as an F21 goes you would have to check if the STC applies.

putting the skylight in is not a problem. Finishing the inside around it is. Living in the frozen north (upstate New York) I need to fill up all of the area between the headliner over the baggage are and around the wings to keep out the cold breeze that blows on the back of your head.

You are just adding weight, wear some heavier Carharts when you fly!

Jim we fabriced our baggage but that would not work with you F21. We don't have extended baggage. Weren't there F21s built with skylights? How did they do it? When I talked to Mr. Clayton several years ago he told me Dorothy used his STC to install skylights at the factory rather than try to get it on the TC.

I still have plenty of ABS plastic bird baths that are shaped remarkably like the aft headliner of an F-19/F-21.
