  • Early picture of Terry's N95598

I was searching a website titled Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields looking for an old airfield I found on Google Maps (satellite) and found this picture of Terry's Tcraft @ Belton Airport. Belton is a small town SW of Temple, TX. The airport is long gone, replaced by a junk yard.

    Here's the picture: http://www.airfields-freeman.com/TX/..._m2052d8ff.jpg
The caption says the picture is the last one located while the airport was still in operation. Picture taken summer 1966.

    Here's the website: http://www.airfields-freeman.com/index.htm

My friend George Wilhite photographed that image back in the 1960's. Here it is in original form and with some filtering. Here is another picture taken in 2010 at Salado TX... just about 10 miles from the old Belton airport. And the last one was taken in 2015 at our airstrip, Tick Hill within 25 statute miles from Belton. All the owners of this airplane since new have been in one of only five counties in TX... all within a 150-mile radius.

It seems she photographs well from the right side.

I look at that website often, particularly for abandoned airfields at or near places that I have visited or am likely to visit in the USA. It's a little gem!

For example, just last May I went and flew my US Taylorcraft over Longview, WA, where Molt Taylor developed his Aerocar. It's just next door to Kelso where I met up with David (of this parish).

EDIT: I see that the website is down...can anyone with expertise tell why? Here's the website: http://www.airfields-freeman.com/index.htm

        Rob,

I was just on that site a couple of days ago. I tried your link and came up empty. I tried another way of getting in, and it failed too. I hope that site doesn't fade away. It is (was) a great site.

It wouldn't suprise me if the owner of the site ran out of cash so host it. It was surely not a huge site (in terms of gigabytes) to host?

Can anyone access a contact for the site owner...I'm sure a "crowdfunding" effort would pay for a hosting site.

He has tried to fund the site in the past, I am thinking funding ran out. I certainly hope not, maybe he is doing it as a wake-up call to those who use the site and he will come back with a funding caveat.
            Cheers,

It costs about $100 a year for his amount of cyberspace, maybe less.

I'm sure someone with excess space on their system could piggy-back it.

I worked for Pete Reed's brother, Elmer Reed. Elmer Reed had a flight school and maintenance operation at the Temple airport a few miles away. I flew into the Belton airport many time with parts the brothers traded/sold back and forth. Great memories. Lee Nicklas
