  • 2015 central texas taylorcraft fly-in

    Hello all,
I just wanted to get this new thread opened up for discussions about the 2015 Central Texas Taylorcraft Fly-in. Talks are started and we WILL have the fly-in again this year. We are blessed to have the opportunity to again use the same venue as the recent fly-ins at FORT PARKER FLYING FIELD in Groesbeck Texas. Jed, Sarah, and Darius have been wonderful hosts in years past.

This year, we are combining the event with the Cessna 120/140 Pilots Association's annual fly-in. They have been holding their fly-in at the same location since 2013 and we have had some folks who go to both. We've decided to pool the resources into one effort for a better turnout for both this year. I am in talks with Vic White of the Cessna group and we are trying to nail down dates that will work with the folks at Fort Parker. Right now, we are trying for the late April or early May time frame.

I will try to keep this thread updated as we have new news to report. I would like to encourage everyone to come and show these Cessna drivers what a real airplane is supposed to be like. We certainly have the chance to turn out better numbers if the weather and circumstances cooperate. They really are a great bunch of guys. Its just too bad they don't have such nice airplanes to fly as we are blessed to have.

We now have the 2015 Taylorcraft Fly-In date set with the Fort Parker Gang... April 24-25-26, 2015. I am not sure if this jives with Cessna 120-140 Ass'n, but we hope so. I am planning to spread the word out to Luscombe and Aeronca folks as well. The calendar at the Fort was filling up, so we got the April 25th slot nailed down. If you haven't been to Fort Parker Flying Field yet, you have missed a really nice destination. So mark your calendars and be sure to come.

Not that it really makes a difference to me, but that is during Sun'nFun.

        Tom...
Yes, we noted that. Since the Fort Parker schedule was already filling up, we didn't have much choice. Unfortunately, some of the folks East of us may have a conflict or a dilemma about which one to attend. I am sure the weather will influence that as well. But honestly, the best one of our fly-ins in past years was on the same weekend as SNF. So we will hope for the best and look for the Texas and Oklahoma Taylorcraft tribesmen to be there. And perhaps we will draw others who might prefer a laid back / country sort of atmosphere as opposed to the commercialized ambiance of SNF. We hope also to have the highest concentration of Taylorcrafts at any one place in the world on that day. Hope you can come, Tom.

THE FOLLOWING JUST WENT UP ON THE LUSCOMBE YAHOO FORUMS

            ************************************************** ***********
            APRIL 24, 25, 26, 2015 Central Texas Taylorcraft, Luscombe, 120/140, et.al. Fly-In

For those not attending Sun-N-Fun this year or for anyone looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, we are inviting you to bring your Luscombe and join us at Fort Parker Flying Field. For the past three years, we have called this the Central Texas Taylorcraft Fly-in. But this year, we are combining ours with the Cessna 120/140 group and we also want to invite Luscombes to share in the fun. Champs, Chiefs, Interstates, and Cubs are welcome too.

This venue is a wonderfully relaxed grass airstrip situated alongside the Old Fort Parker Historic site just outside of Groesbeck TX. There are RV hookups and limited cottage type lodging accommodations on-site at the Fort. The airfield is excellent for camping with showers available next door at the Fort. Or you can stay in town at Groesbeck or Mexia within minutes of the field. Check the Fort Parker Flying Field website for lodging information. Sporadic shuttle runs and hitch-hiking will be available.

We are going to have a good old fashioned cookout on Friday night, sponsored by Certified Aeronautical Products, LLC. Saturday continental breakfast on the field. Flour Bombing and Spot Landing contests catered lunch and supper also on Saturday. Sunday continental breakfast and departures.

Registration $10 per person. Proceeds go to the Old Fort Parker site and the Flying Field. A Special donation will be taken up for the building of a new pavilion on the airfield which will enhance future fly-in events.

This airfield opened up in 2012 and is one of Texas' best kept secrets. Owner Jed Keck bought the land with the intent to create a friendly environment to vintage airplanes and sport flyers of the region. Jed employes a local man, Darius Farmer, to maintain and constantly improve the airfield grounds. Jed himself is gone for much of the year as he works in the Northwest USA as a corporate pilot. When able he is back at the airfield to work with Darius on airfield improvements and community relations.

The Old Fort Parker Historic site is the location of a Texas settler's fort which was raided in 1836 by Comanche Indians. The attack resulted in a bloody massacre and kidnapping of Cynthia Ann Parker. This young girl was then raised by Commanche indians, later married her tribal Chief, and later begot the famed Texas politician and advocate for the region's Indian tribes... Chief Quanah Parker. Today, the old fort is maintained by a city/county advisory board who strives to preserve the historical knowledge of these pioneer days of Texas. Sarah McReynolds runs the facility on a very limited budget. She has been a wonderful supporter of the airfield and does a wonderful job with the catering of the meals for the fly-in.

NOTE: All Piper airplanes are also welcome, except Comanches... (just kidding).

Flying in to DAL and driving down Thursday. Will be on hand for the festivities Friday, Sataturday and Sunday.

                  Looking forward to it.

It bums me out to report that I won't make it. I've been planning to go to this one for two years. My Tcraft is finally ready. But my daughter's confirmation and prom are both on that weekend. So the timing just doesn't work.

I had a trip to SE Asia pop up, and I have to leave the 23rd. I will not be able to go, but I hope one of the TaleDragons will bring our BC12D to the fly-in.

Sorry I am going to miss it, I was looking forward to the fun times at the fly-in..

                          Terry,

How does the Ft. Parker aerodrome handle rain/water? 2 1/2" to 3" reported in Groesbeck/Mexia area the last few days. More in forecast.

I was on the phone yesterday with the fielg manager, Darius Farmer. He says the sod is in great shape and firm. Yesterday and today were sunny all day. Still chances of rain for tomorrow thru Fri. I will stay in touch with Darius this week and will try to post updates.
