    Re: WANTED: Tailwheel Leaf Spring

    Kevin,

It's worth buying new. ACS or others supply them.

The UK Taylorcraft fleet at my airfield (which is quite heavily utilised...60 - 120 hours per year each aircraft involving many circuits/check-outs) we replace the leaf springs every 5 years or so.

The consequences of a broken leaf spring/tailwheel bolt are sufficiently expensive to warrant the cost of replacing them as part of "preventive maintenance" rather than "fix it when it breaks".

      Rob,
I'm actually not wanting it for a taylorcraft. I want it for my cousins Startduster II. We've been trying to find a replacement tailwheel spring for it that will work well and everything we get is either the wrong size to work or too weat to support it. I borrowed one from a friends taylorcraft and we bolted it on, everything looks and hooks up perfectly. The angles are perfect and everything but I don't want to use a borrowed spring for a test run. I would like to find a good used one for a reasonable price to experiment with before spending the extra money for a new one.

Funnily, the local maintenance organisation is doing the same for a locally based Starduster Too too. It keeps getting bent. /Bart Simpson.

When it comes back, I'll enquire about the cost. The weight (and loading) of the Starduster Too is a lot more than a Taylorcraft...I'd be very nervous about using a Taylorcraft leaf spring.

I've been running one on my starduster II for about 50 hours and it works great with a Matco tailwheel but my cousins rudder horn for the tailwheel is set up different then mine, his is also heavier on the tail, and he is putting a scott 3200 tailwheel on his.

                Kevin -

When I removed my leaf springs I found an extra short one somebody had substituted for the middle one causing the wild shimmy I'd been experiencing. I replaced it with a new one of the correct size from Univair but had to take it to a truck spring shop to have the mount hole enlarged to the correct size.

You are welcome to the one I took off if you are in need of an extra short piece.
