Re: Taylorcraft Metal Parts by David Wenglarz

While I was doing AGATE for NASA we were developing the Glass Panels for GA. As a joke I took my Taylorcraft panel and used full size photos of the glass panels to paste up an all glass Taylorcraft. It looked real from INCHES away!
You want to see some SHOCKED faces? Try when someone looks in the locked door of a 100mph rag and tube antique and sees a $150,000 instrument panel! I wish I could find the pictures. They stuck on really easy and would be GREAT for going to a local Fly-In.

One problem to look out for on the wing to fuselage fairings is ALL of the planes seem to be a little different. The long strips also tend to buckle and get "waves" if the fairing is off by just a fraction of a degree. I am trying to make them for the 41 now and they are a BEAR to get to fit right, especially close to the wing leading edge and windscreen. I think they must have custom cut a paper template for the front by the glass then trimmed the long pieces to the trailing edge on the plane.
Just as a hint to save some money, aluminum gutter flashing is fairly inexpensive and makes pretty good fairings. Don't get the stuff that is too thin, it is too hard to handle. Also, count your fingers before and after working with those rolls of narrow aluminum. The edges are like razor blades and cut you without your even feeling it!

My wing bands are in two pieces and have a single rivet joining the two. It makes it easy to fit the wing bands snugly because I can adjust the fit.
The rivet is located about four feet from the training edge on the bottom side. this system works well, although I can't vouch for it being an original part.

Mark and anyone else in need of the wing-to-fuselage fairings, (the long bands of aluminum).

David said he is interested in making those for anyone who is needs them. I would think it would be better for him to make more than just one set at a time. I might get a set also. No pricing yet, but I would like a show of hands who would be seriously interested. Thanks!

From messing with them for a while he is going to at least need a paper template of the "wrap" from the top back of the windshield, around the leading edge and back along the bottom to the front of the door. That area seems to be a little different on almost every plane. The paper template from the right side won't even fit the left on either of my planes when you flip it over. The 45 bands can't even be put on the 41 (or the other way around either).

I think he has a Taylorcraft, but I don't know the details of it.

I would be interested in a set of wing root fairings if the price isn't too high.

I would also be interested in a set of wind root fuselage fairings for a reasonable price.

Any consideration given to fabricate bungee covers, landing gear-fuselage fairings and windshield-fuselage fairings bands ? I'm sure that templates can provided if needed. Each owner may have to do so trimming to adapt the pieces to fit their own plane; which is much less work than starting from scratch, IMHO.

On of my winter projects is to replace/fabricate a new metal cover over the instrument panel by using the existing one as a template, if it holds up. I'm sure that Mr. Wenglarz could also easily make this cover. I'm considering using aluminum for the replacement ( some left overs from the Murphy fabrication-building).

                  kewflyer,

Please go to the beginning of this thread for pictures and prices. He makes the bungee covers and landing gear to fuselage fairings. He can probably also make the other items. Just give him a call.

If you get the Taylorcraft newsletter he has an advertisement there that shows the blister type bungee covers but has them identified as "Scoops". What the heck, they probably WOULD make nice scoops!
If you need the flat, pre-war type covers he makes glove box doors, so that should be a snap. If dimensions are needed for the flat ones just yell.

I saw that scoop too. Never thought to use them for that , perhaps on the boot cowl in the summer time.
