  • Data Plate

Oksy here it is and I am a noob,
My plane dosn't have a data plate, just logs (basket case).
According to the logs it was a BL, I have a lycoming eng but I am thinking strongly about a continential, I also have a cont. engine and almost complete firewall foward.
What makes the plane? data plate or logs, Will I really screw myself doing certian things even though kinda bypassing certian paper work?

    Re: Data Plate

Do you have the airplane registered to you with the FAA? If not get that done first. After it is registered write a letter to your local FSDO requesting authorization to get a replacement data tag made. They should give you a letter authorizing this. That letter and a fee can be sent to Forrest and he can make you a new data tag. Tom

      Re: Data Plate

I got a replacement data plate for my T. Here's my advice:

      1. search data + plate on this website to get a flavor of past experience. The thread from Feb. of last year is a good one.

      2. get a letter of authorization from your local FSDO. They may just do it over the phone or they may want to see the airplane to check the serial number stamped on the frame. My frame had a different serial number from the paperwork (not an unusual situation on a T-Craft), but I was able to show some fuselage repairs that matched old 337's.

3.Do not, repeat, DO NOT depend on Forrest to make you a data plate. I spent 6 months and a shitload of frustration trying to get a data plate out of Forrest. He lost my paperwork twice (try explaining to the FSDO guy that you want him to send another authorization letter), didn't return emails or phone calls, ignored repeated letters, and in the end I never did get my data plate. It was a nightmare.

      4. Get a blank plate from Allards or one of the forum members and stamp it yourself or have the local trophy shop do it. Keep the FAA letter of authorization in your logbook in case anyone would ever question your plate.

          Re: Data Plate

Well here's a new twist, I got to lookiing for my serial number and the only number I can find is on the right upperhand door hinge and it is #1220 but my log books and bill of sale and the N number that I have filed on with the FAA state #2853.
I looked everywhere -both doors, the tube under the dash (throttle area), the gussets for the seat tube and anyplace else that I could access.
Dunno what to think of at this point

Well I checked the FAA data base and could not find any Taylorcraft with the #1220 serial number, but my number #2853 is there

My serial number is different than that stamped on the fuselage too.

I think that fuselage number is meaningless. Go with the serial number on the records.

Well I did find a data plate unused from alliance Ohio, antique, so now I'll just get the paperwork done, kinda hard to believe that I found 1 unstamped with the Alliance OH stamping on it
