  • A-65-8 parts

I am building an A-65-8 for my T-craft and have discovered that my set of .010 undersize connecting rod bearings containes one pair of standard bearings. Fresno sells only full sets which include mains and all.

Does anyone have a pair of unused .010 inserts (between the connecting rod and the crankshaft) that they will sell? I also need a pair of unused connecting rod bolts and nuts. I have used ones but I don't know what they have been through so I'm not going to use them.

I will take a full set of the bearings if single pairs are not available. I have been mucking around for a year trying to get this bird back in the air. A few more hours of labor and I'll be ready to put this engne in the plane.

Ron, Go to your local auto parts wholesale house. Ask for a rod bearing for a 226 Cont (Kaiser- Frasier vintage) or 6226 Cont Ind or fork truck engine. I think you will find them to the exact same size. Avail at one time from std to to .060 under!!! Con rod bearings are one thing the main brg are another story.

        Re: A-65-8 parts

Thank you for the replies gents. I called aircraft specialties and ordered a pair of bearings for 1 connecting rod, 2 rod bolts, 2 rod bolt nuts, and 2 rod bolt cotter pins. I received 1 pair of bearings, 8 bolts, 4 nuts and 8 cotter pins. The bill came to $214.84.

They couldn't figure out what happened and were very nice about taking back the parts I didn't order. The bearing half was$12.70 each. The rod bolts were $18.50 each. So if you need engine parts Aircraft Specialties may have them.

I was surprised at how many differences there are in the cases and what parts are interchangable between them. i was also surprised to find that one of the cam followers in a new set of followers was so oversized that it would only slide half way down the guide. I also found that the replacement rod bearing was .010 under as was required (actually .010 oversized to fit the undersized crank) was not the same size as my original replacement bearings. Aircraft Specialties had informed me that they understood that you shouldn't mix brands of bearings. I fitted the bearings and did a plastigauge check and the clearances were fine so I doubt that it will make any difference.

Tomorrow I will be ready to mount the cylinders, meanwhile I will fly my open cockpit minimax to get my fix.

        Thanks for the help

          Hi Karl
I think that you can use Essex pistons in a '39 Pontiac also. I think I used rings from a European 4 cylinder sedan in my '40 Indian race bike. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Continental bearings were fitted in a lot of different engines.

          Thanks
