  • Need Right Front Wing Strut or.....?

Need the Right Front wing strut for a 46 BC-12D..... or?

I hit the engine cover of a tractor parked on the grass taxi way into the hangar.... I had it cleared, I thought, but there was a small swell/ditch on the side of the tractor that made the wing drop and the strut hit the top of the engine cover of the tractor. Not my day.

The A&P said that it requires welding a sleeve over the depression in order to reinforce the strut..... he quoted that "...the strut can not have any indentations/depressions that modify the structure or streamline of the strut...".... structurally sound...

The welding of the sleeve was quoted at over $ 400, including the sleeve, welding and 2 coats of paint on the restored area, which I think is pretty steep.

Any advice or ideas are appreciated.

    Thanks Ralph

I have a pair of front struts that I removed to put on sealed struts. I was told by my IA that they passed. Make me an offer. They are painted boston marroon.

Ralph - I can give it a try if you'd like; just realize it could be a complete disaster and could take several weeks; you'll need a fall-back position - Mike

Thank you for the offer Mike.
I'm leaning towards getting usable [=inspected = AD compliance] struts. I may have to get at least the two front ones from the same plane in order to avoid potential issues related to length between the strut attachments at each end.

Tcraft Vs farm tractor: tractor wont start now / Tcraft needs wing strut... the price of playing "chicken" .....

        Regards

Well, if you decide to throw them away, throw them this way and I'll use them for practice - Mike

Ralph- I got your voicemail but could not get the extension to call you back- sorry.

I have a couple rear struts but do not have any front ones. Sorry! I'll keep my eyes open for you though.

                    Billy:

Thanks ... I will call you. As for the Mag, which one do you have...scintilla?
A few local options... will discuss when I call you this morning. We used a Mag mechanic in Indiana a few months back when the left mag died on us. He is very good and reasonable. You may also want to call Rosnick in PA. He has a bunch of small C-65 to C-90 engines and parts.
I can take the Maule to pick up the struts ...

                    Thanks again
