      Calvin:
Check your local trucking company for ground shared freight. Its cheeper than UPS, etc... with open delivery date.... so it gets delivered whenever or about a week or so.... This would be the least expensive way to get them to you.

Regarding the price, just make an honest offer for the four of them.

Let me know, since they are in storage in the upper part of the hangar.

Get them soon, since there's a tcraft being restored at our field and he saw them already.... about 3 months ago.

If you want them to be x-rayed let me know. I can take them in for you. I paid aboiut $450-500 if I recall. Your choice.

      Regards

      Ralph

Struts are VERY easy to damage in shipping. Mine (the 45 struts) were sent by truck and got some minor dents (still good, just minor marks) but some of the guys at the airport were looking at them and one suggested shipping in a large PVC pipe. I haven't tried it, but it sure made sense, as long as they are packed so they don't bang into each other in the tube.
Like I said, I haven't tried it, but plan to when I send my original set (for the 41) in to be sealed so I don't have to mess with the inspection insanity.

I also plan to insure the heck out of them since I doubt I will be able to find any small ones if one is damaged. Maybe I will build a crate around the pipe.

What's this about being able to have struts sealed?

            Thanks Pat

PVC pipe works well. I wrapped mine all up so they didn't touch each other and all four (pre-war size) will just fit inside of a 10' x 6" I.D. tube. Glue a solid cap on one end and a threaded clean-out on the other. I delivered them myself to an inspection facility in St. Louis, but others did this and shipped a few sets together all on pallets.

                Pat,
At Sun-N-Fun the board met with Bill Read from Wag-Aero and it looks like Wag will be taking in our old struts, inspecting them, sealing them and eliminating the repeat inspections as part of an AMOC (I don't know the details of how they will do the sealing, but if they have an AMOC, it really doesn't matter). Forrest was going to meet with them again on May 8th. I'm kind of excited as I still have my 1941 struts from my plane (they look great and I refused to throw them out).
I haven't heard much new and have been holding off on bugging Wag or Forrest as answering my questions would probably just slow the process. If Wag can do this I think they may have a BUNCH of customers!

                  Hank,
Tom O'Neal called yesterday and asked me to post some information about the AMOC they have for sealing the struts. They inspect and treat them, and to seal the rear they have to replace the adjustment barrels. The price is $1100.00 for the 4. I asked if they charge for inspecting the struts that don't pass and he said at this time they don't plan to. I bought a set of new struts back when they first got the approval from the FAA and the rear are the same size as my original pre wars and look the same so I think if one of those failed and you cant find a replacement you could probably just use one new one---the only difference you may need to consider is the weight. The fronts are the same overall diameter as pre-wars but the major axis is less and the minor is larger so if you have one fail and bought a new replacement then I think you would need to replace both-If you want to call Tom I think he would be glad to check on any questions you may need to find out about-his extension is 124.
                  Good luck--

Go to a rug/carpet store and get a carpet tube, heavy card board. this works also, and is free.
