  • BC-12D Tail Surfaces WTB

Looks like I'll be picking up a basket case '46 project within a couple of weeks to tinker with.

I'm definitely looking for used serviceable elevators and a rudder (2 hinge post-war), and perhaps the stabilizers as well.

I contacted one advertiser (not here) who had them, but wanted more for them than what I'm paying for the whole project.

If anyone here has some tail surfaces they want to see fly again at a reasonable price or trade for something, let me know.

I spoke to that guy, thanks Eric. I'm just lining up possible alternatives if he doesn't work out, but he seems like a nice old fella.

And Rob, it's not so much "nice guy" nearly as much as "addict" suffering withdrawals. The next one will be my fifth one of these damn things. And all of you bums are being held accountable as enablers!

I don't have the project just yet but I do have a handshake agreement on it which should happen in a week or so. I have the old engine from my previous airplane in the hangar as well as an engine mount, and a somewhat usable exhaust system. After four sets of cooling baffle experiments the last time I figure I can do that reasonably well too. I figure I owe it to the type to finally resurrect one from fading away, though I doubt it will be nearly as champion quality as Joel's or Rob's.

I just hope the control yoke pivot bosses on the post-war fuselage are the needed 1/2 inch further apart (compared to pre-war fuselages) that will allow my Auster control stick assembly to bolt in! That will be a hoot if I can get it to work.

I have 2 ea 3 hinge horiz stabilizers, 2 ea 2 hinge horizontal stabilizers and 1 ea 2 hinge elevator with the complete trim assembly installed. All are NOS and am asking about half the factory list price plus shipping.

            Hi Bill,
Would you have baffles for sale for a 65 horsepower? Also I'm looking for an exhaust schroud for the 65.
            Thanks,
            Larry Ferren

              Re: BC-12D Tail Surfaces WTB

Larry, I kept my 65HP baffles and used them on the 85 upgrade on my last airplane, so they are not mine anymore. For what it's worth, the 65 and 85 baffles are real close if not identical, a few taps with a mallet would take care of almost any difference in my opinion. There's so much tightening up and fitting that they need anyway.

Although it sounds pretty frightening, the truth is that you can get some soft aluminum and pound out the cylinder shape without too much aggravation. The secret is using truly O condition aluminum. As I wrote in another thread months ago, you can make up very good equivalent baffling using flat sheets and single-curvature pieces and a few rivets.

I do not have a really good exhaust shroud, I may have even thrown out the old one hanging on my wall because it was so awful. Sorry about that, I would suggest you contact either Univair or Sonny Poarch in Florida for an exhaust or shroud. If you buy one in Florida, I suggest you resist the temptation to buy a two-piece exhaust system. Unless Sonny has come up with something really clever, there is no 100% safe way to connect the two exhaust parts without exhaust leaking out into the CABIN side of the shroud.
