Airtex "cowl pad" for sale

This is a piece of fitted carpet that protects the dash (what is the proper airframe terminology for that piece?) between the instrument panel and windscreen. Bought this from Airtex for $18 to match my carpet set, but decided to go with vinyl glued directly to the aluminum instead. Airtex "beige", but kind of a medium brown. 1/4 inch pile nylon carpet, non-skid foam back. Aft (instrument panel) edge is sewn with edging tape, but forward edge is untrimmed, to be cut to fit around your windscreen tubing. If you habitually set your headset and kneeboard up on the dash, you need this for scratch protection.

It's called a "Glare Shield" and carpet on top works well since the whole idea is to keep the surface from reflecting on the windshield.
I was told the original glare shields were made from the leather textured cardboard that is used for the hat shelf in old cars. You can get big sheets of it from old car restoration upholstery suppliers (and it's CHEAP, which is good since the first time it gets wet it is ruined).

Aha. Glare shield. Airtex calls it a "cowl pad"...

I ordered extra "barley"-colored vinyl from Airtex that matches the new upholstery and glued that to the aluminum glare shield. Not as authentic as the black cardboard stuff, but looks nice and certainly more waterproof. And I've trained myself not to toss anything up on the glare shield, not even charts.

"Cowl pads" are $16 (unless the price has gone up since 2006) from Airtex Products in Pennsylvania, 215-295-4115, www.airtexinteriors.com. Available in ten different carpet colors. Ask them to leave the front edge untrimmed so you can cut it to fit yourself. They were very good about making me a second one at no charge when the first was too short. Come to think of it, they also re-hemmed my floor carpet edges at no charge after it was trimmed to fit around the brake pedals and rudder cable covers. Great customer service -- I sure like Airtex.
