Propeller needed

Tribe- During annual I found that some kind soul welded the tip on my prop at some point. I had taken it to the prop shop for paint and when we stripped it we found the bad news.

So. . . . I now need a McCauley 1A90, or 1B90 or a Sensenich 74CK series prop. Anyone have an extra? I preffer somethin 72 o rmore inches and 43 or less pitch but I'm not going to be choosey. It is for a C-85-8F.

Thanks for all the help regarding the prop- I found one locally yesterday- I took it to the prop shop to make sure it was a good one and it checked out as good as new.

I had an extreme climb prop (1A90 71x42) on a C-85 and could redline it fairly easilly. This one is a 1A90 72x45- does anyone have any experience with this engine/ prop combo? I am sure I'll be a bit faster but want to keep a good climb - it was only 90-95 in cruise before but was off the ground in a very short distance.

Eric, I had the 72/45 on mine with a C85-12, and I wound up having it flattened to 42 like your old one. It cruised great, but wasn't much fun on skiis..

John- Thanks for the reply- my old BC12-D-85 had a 72x46 and did well but definately was not as quick off the ground as the 71x42 that is on the one I own now. I think I may have the shop go ahead and pitch it to 43- especially since I am picking up an extra inch in length. The old prop would turn 2500 rpm static- in level flight it was well over red line. I fly a 160 HP Super Cub alot and the Tcraft (solo and light on fuel) was off the ground faster that the Cub (with 2 on board) and it was faster! These are amazing little planes.

How are the horses- I really enjoyed my visit last year. A co-worker is coming up on Monday for the same parachute rigger class. How is the weather? I told him to drive up to the lake etc.

Eric,
What does one do with a prop with a welded tip? Is it only good for a clock and hanging on a wall or can it be cut down and used on another engine as an experimental? Not that I want one like that, but I am curious and would hate to see a prop go to waste if it is still useful to anyone.
Even worse I would hate to see someone actually try and use it if it was unsafe and they came across it in a garage sale 20 years after we are all "gone west". We had a lot of parts in the Navy we worried about accidently ending up back in the system and I have some "creative" ways to insure a part is never used while making it "look" OK.

I marked it SCRAP on the hub and painted it up real nice- it now sports a beautiful scrap spinner and hangs on the wall of my shop. I too worried about someone using it after I'm gone- unless they can't read I think that should do the trick.

It was only 71 inches to begin with- it would be 67 if I cut all the weld out and re-shaped the tips. Yes it is unfortunate but I'm glad we discovered it on the ground!

I'm sure it could be used on an experimental but I do not want the potential for issues- it's not worth what I could get for it. . . .

Weather is fine up here... send your friend up if he wants a visit... I'm doing a Super Cub right now with all the AK goodies (wheels, brakes, prop, cuff, vg's, etc....).
The horses are doing fine. Hooked a pair of the Clydes up the weekend before Christmas and gave all the neighborhood (as well as not-so-neighborhood) kids of all ages a hayride...had over 100 through here throughout the day! It was a blast, and we were taking harness off after dark! The little guy is my sister's grandson..he really likes those big horses!!

Tribe- I made it up to John's last year while I was in Missoula for work. He has a really nice place and an awesome airstrip- a truly beautiful place. If you hav enever stood beside a Clydesdale you can't appreciate their stature. If I am not mistaken John (and his daughter) are involved with the Budweiser horses.

You meet the neatest folks in a Tcraft!

Eric your prop probably wasnt legal, but it was flying when you got it and would probably last as long as a new one. Marv

Actually, my wife was the one that worked for Budweiser, on the SeaWorld hitch out of SanDiego. My oldest daughter is thinking of going to work for them now..but we'll see. Other than that, we just raise them and Percherons.

Well- I got a chance to fly the new 1A90 71x45 McCauley prop. . . .WOW! I did notice a little less climb but man was it faster. I suspect my airspeed indicator is a little off but I indicated 115 at 2350 rpm and just under Vne (around 135) at full throttle (2600 rpm). The old prop was at least 12-15 mph slower. The plane seems to really get on step better at the higher cruise speeds. I plan to leave it alone until summer and only re-pitch it a little if needed.

Now I just need to find some poor old Luscombe to race!

What we need is an in-flight adjustable prop to get the best of both worlds .
When I redo my C90 in the spring I expect to gain another 15-20 hp . I will see where that gets me but I expect I will still be looking for more. The next
step for me after that will be an in-flight adjustable. They are out ther but
also Tres Tres expensive !!
