  • Federal SC-2 skis wanted

A friend is considering owning a local Stinson 10A and would like to fly skis. On their TCDS A-738 they list Federal SC-2 skis as approved which I suspect are old and rare. Alternatively he might be able to install others but would need to find acceptable data from a prior approval.

Any suggestions or help with finding the SC-2's or others that could be flown appreciated.

I am at a bit of disadvantage because I sold my t-craft and passed on all the docs.

But at one time I had SC-2's for it. They are wide and short.

They also have a service bulletin and perhaps an AD regarding cracks along the spine near the pedestal attach.

    Easy to apply the reinforcement.

I no longer have the docs and cannot find an AD so it must have been a service bulletin.

Not saying the skis are bad just adding info. I liked mine.

Thanks Dave and Tim for the obs and info. The SC-2's are on the TCDS...nothing else and no STC's for other skis for the 10A Stinsons. This plane has had the Alsworth massage with an O-290-D2 but does have front ski tabs exiting the lower cowling. I suggested to the potential owner to find SC-2's or get a Field Approval in hand prior to purchase.

The current owner is an experienced pilot and A&P-IA I was told so my only task is to help locate the easy solution. Others may wish to drink FSDO coffee and watch the grass grow getting an approval for something else plus any rigging. Golden Rule deal is all I'm in for.

Edit: Link to discussion and pictures of old skis...Federal SC-1, SC-2, A1500, A1500A, A2000 and so on: http://www.skiplane.org/cgi-bin/yabb...m=1222982539/0

I have very often had success find "odd" and rare parts by putting one of those short (and free often) wanted ads on Barnstormer.

Yes good idea dave and I'll pass it on to the prospective plane buyer. The Stinson 10 is interesting but unsupported. Owner built parts and whatever it takes to keep it flying I guess. Should perform well with 135hp and the right prop. Wheels, skis, no float certification.

Latest is he's working on a dialog with the current mechanic owner for alternative ski approval and soon reaching out to other owners for advice. Good new pilot that will get it done.
