L-2 Rebuild Continued.....Exhaust question

I'd like to pick the brains of all the L-2 guru's...I'm winding down to the end of rebuilding my L-2A and it all comes down to my last and final hurdle. The "exhaust", mainly the muffler. there is a small hole that I'm not comfortable with; and could probably have a temp fix to get me by. The heat shroud also has (for some reason or another), a portion of it cut out. See attached picture. Wag Aero and Aerospace Welding have been my only current option. It appears a custom built muffler is the only option available. I'm not happy with this because of the cost ($1000+). I'm hoping next year to step up to a Cont. 85hp which will require its own unique exhaust system. To the point - do any of you out there have an L-2 muffler for sale? Any input, as always would be greatly appreciated.

Jim,

Give Sonny Poarch an e-mail at [email protected]. A completely new stainless exhaust is $850, but he should be able to give you some advice. One other thing, a friend of mine has an 85 on his, but it looks like a stock exhaust to me??? I'm not that familiar with the exhaust as mine has a BC-12D exhaust on it. I plan on getting a system from Sonny to rectify that.

Jim,you can use the same exhaust on the 85 as you have on the 65. The only modifaction needed is on the heat muff carb heat side. Dick

Unless you install a -12 like we have and the stock exhaust no longer works. I should have a muffler but I dob't I have a shroud.

Hi Dick - I'm glad you got this thread. I made it to Preswick, Scotland an hour or so ago. I was not able to call you again before I left New York. I called you to ask the question; will the exhaust system interchange with the 85?

Marty, Thanks for your info too. I will check out Sonny's website before I hit the rack. I'll let you know what I find out.

Mike I'd like to talk with you too about this muffler you have. Unfortunately, I'm out of country now and will not be in cell phone range until the 14th. I'll call you if you leave me a number at [email protected] If it is the same as what I have, I will probably be interested in this. The scroud I have is repairable.

Hey... all you L2 Tcrafters! I'm rewriting a screenplay about C.G. Taylor & Taylorcraft. And, I'm writing a screenplay about the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) during WWII. I'm looking for L2s for a photo shoot and to shoot a "trailer" (ad) about the film scripts. I would like to do the photo shoot and trailer when the weather improves. I'll need to create the WWII atmosphere for the photos/trailer... I'm looking for a Link Trainer which was used to train pilots in WWII. And, I'm looking for some Austers. Lastly, I'm looking for an L2 for myself, even a basket case... to rebuild. I would greatly appreciate any assistance from you L2s...

We did as well the first time but was far from ideal. The approval we used specify's an ercoupe muffler and works a whole lot better.

My L-2M is using a modified Cessna muffler and shield. I have the 337, if you think it would help.
