Looking for info on 1943 Taylorcraft L-2M Serial #5599

I'm considering buying a 1943 Taylorcraft L-2M basket case that does not have any logs. It's Serial # 5599. It's registered as an DCO-65 and not as a L-2M ? Its missing everything firewall forward and I'm not sure if there is a Army Air Force data plate with it or not. Any info at all would be a lot of help.

They are all classified as DCO-65's. There used to be a government office that had the disposition cards for all the old military aircraft that would show its military history. Look at the bottom of the throttle, I think the rear one but cannot remember. That will show the serial number, hopefully it matches. That throttle is basically the airplane no matter where the other parts come from. A military data plate can be reproduced, there is also a way to find what the military serial number would be based on the aircraft serial number. I know I am not a lot of help here, it has been many years since I had my L-2B. Hope others can jump in and help. In the meantime, I will search here on the forum. Thanks for the fast reply ! I'm doing my best to research what the possible Army Air force number is 43-***** ? Once I can figure that out then at least I can see where it served from it's accident records.

There is a formula somewhere, maybe on here, that will give you that. Unfortunately, we recently lost one of our best L-2 guys. The other L-2 guy is concentrating on cars, now.

I think I might have figured it out, 43-26286 ? I might be wrong. I sent Forest Barber a message to see if he could shed any light on it.

I came up with 43-26287.

For L-2M's, the formula is 20688 + serial number
