Horizonal Stab Bolts

Posted for non-member: " Could you supply me with the paper work that I need to drill out the bolt holes for the horizontal stab to put larger bolts in those holes.

Try AC43.13. Chapter 7, page 39. "Generally, it is permissible to use the first-lettered drill size larger than the nominal bolt diameter, ......." "In the event of over-sized or elongated holes in structural members, reaming or drililng the hole to accept the next larger bolt size may be permissible." It goes on to say that you should check with the manufacturer's engineering department or the FAA before drilling or reaming any bolt hole in a "critical structure".

I am pretty sure the stab attach bolts will be considered "critical" by the FAA. They do not see that much load, but there is no factory engineering to verify that and the feds are notoriously conservative (safety wired to the "NO" position).
I have seen a number of stabs with a curved washer welded on the top and bottom so the hole is filled back to standard size. Never seen any paperwork, but it looked like a good repair to me. The one who really decides is your IA. He is the one who has to sign it off.
A loose stab on pre-flight does NOT instill confidence!

Don' know if this will help. I have attached the L-2 repair manual Stabilizer section, read the last paragraph (6). The L-2 uses the same stabilizer as the BC-12D.
