  • metal spar wing conversion

Im building my wings with metal spars and the tube the jury strut attaches to will not fit as the metal spar is a little thicker. Any comments on just cutting off the outer strap and using two bolts per side?
All the main structural points are bolted on with aluminum spacers, the ribs will have wood spacers with #4 machine screws. Thats the plan so far. Also installing four tanks and squaring off the wing tips.

The purpose of the spars is to get rid of the wood, use aluminum spacers on everything. Atlee Dodge in Anchorage can modify that compression strut for the jury struts. You might also want to build a stall fence while you are at it. Look at a 185 that has the fin sticking up between the aileron and flap...Tim

      Re: metal spar wing conversion

I have nothing against wood, but as i pulled apart two sets of wings for this project i had a lot of rot and also a cracked spar. Mainly its just cheaper to buy metal spars.
I decided not to build the flaps on at this point but an going to add hard points and inspection rings so i can add the Auster flaps down the road. I dont want the project to drag on so will keep it simple for now. I was thinking of wood spacers for the ribs as a weight saving option. All that solid aluminum adds up. Ive seen plastic washers used and may look into these.
So still not sure if i will be compromising strength if i cut off the outer strap? I heated it up and widened it to fit over the web of the spar, but the spar is also a little deeper, about a 1/4", so now it lowers the jury strut attach point a little. Its probably OK but im trying to make no changes over the set up of the the original.
      Thanks for the input.
