  • Closed cowl question

What was the intent of the square hole cut in my nose-bowl? Note the deflector shield. I assume this was to introduce a cooling stream over the bottom of the crankcase? There is a baffle under the crank that looks like it could be home-made. The baffling under the crank is riddled with large "holes" and poor fitting areas. I can not help but believe that this has a negative effect on the intent of the pressure cooling system and airstream coming down over the cylinders.

Was this intended for an engine other than the A-65 that I have mounted?

Funny how I never noticed this until I started working to make the cowls look a little better (until I can change back to open cowl).

    Re: Closed cowl question

Yours is configured right. The square nose hole is to pass air across the case and the piece held between the carb spider and case is what is supposed to be there. A lot of them are pretty beat up and straightening them up does help reduce oil temperatures. It is a royal pain to straighten the lower baffle on the engine and is also a royal pain to take everything off to straighten it properly. DO NOT metal bump the two funky looking bumps where the two spider bolts go through! They are supposed to look like that!
