  • BC12D redone into Auster Replica????

I was reading the Taylorcraft story and saw how Taylorcraft of England added a Gipsy Major to there Model C and made the Auster. I would like to build a Auster Replica using a BC12D (1946)basket case I know of and add the Gipsy Major , the fuel tank mods(wing tanks and a header tank) and the windows.
The C was a A/B with 90,000psi English tubing instead of 10-20 steel that the A and B were made out of. I'd like to hang a Gipsy Major in place of the 65cont. (like the Auster)remove the fuselage tank and add wing tanks and a header tank. Last add the windows/greenhouse in the rear. I'd keep it 2 place and not change it to sticks like the Auster.
I talked to the FAA and the guy there said to check with the Taylorcraft Foundation to see if it's been done before. I asked about using the English drawings to get FAA to go along with the modes and still be a cert. aircraft or even Expermental. He said they should help, but if the Taylorcraft Foundation knew of one that was being done or had been done that would make it easier. So My ? is has anyone ever done that before--or is anyone doing one now?
The basketcase I know of needs longerons replaced--so I could increase the tube thickness to reinforce the fuselage. I would use the English drawings to build a motor mount and to add the windows in the rear.
Please give me your feedback! I am the Grasshopper Squadron Leader for the Replica Fighter Assoc. and thought this would make a Fun-Low Cost_Replica Grasshopper that I could use as a LSA.
    Thanks

Interesting concept , but are you aware that the Auster required 26 lbs of weight in the tail to balance the additional weight of the Gypsy Major ? There was also the MK 4 & 5 that used an 0-290 Lycoming , which may be a more reliable engine than the failure prone Gypsy . Also , BTW , Auster was never certificated in the US .

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Find an L-2A or L-2B and you will have a 'real' warbird that is LSA. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the Auster was not the prettiest airplane made, at least firewall forward. I also read somewhere, here perhaps, of problems with the Gypsy Major motor. Just my thoughts, plus I used to own an L-2B and loved it.
      Cheers,
      Marty

The Gypsy inline engine installation is not a common sight in the US where we mostly see " flat " engines , but with the Lycoming 0-290 installed in the T-Craft airframe , it has a more " American " look to it . The Gypsy also requires an experienced hand and considerable " tinkering to keep airworthy . I think the main problem with an Auster repro if you're looking for LSA , is keeping the weight below the 1320 lb weight limit , and still have a useful load . Keep in mind that the Auster was a T-Craft built under license , but gradually put on quite a bit of additional weight to meet British military requirements .
While the L-2A & B are approved for LSA and are certainly ligitimate warbirds , the Auster is really a different animal with the attraction of being fairly uncommon in the warbird world . I think it is a very intriguing project concept if you can meet the technical challenges it presents .

Re: BC12D redone into Auster Replica????

Ive been looking for info on the junkers trailing flap the auster used. If you have any good drawing or pictures i would be interested as i am rebuilding a 46 bc-12d and would like to add flaps. I thought the trailing edge flaps may be a good option as the wing remains the same (i assume some hard points need added somehow for the flap attach points) I have found little useful info so far.
          Thanks

The auster flaps were below the wing, there is one at the Evergreen Museum. Tim
