carb heat

I hope someone can help me with a little mystery.
My plane, a wrecked BC12-D NC43913, was disassembled when I got it. In doing a inventory of the parts I found what looks like the carb heat box. It is a tube with carburator flange on one end, a flapper in the middle, hot air inlet aft, and air scoop on the bottom. It appears to fit my carb and looks like it will exit the hole in the bottom of the cowl. But no air cleaner. Huh?

Then I found on eBay a "Taylorcraft carb heat box" that looks completely different from the one that came with the plane. This one has a mount for a Brackett type filter and the air scoop in front. It does not seem to fit my cowl.

Shown in the attached photo are the two carb heat boxes. On the left is the little air scoop tube thing...fits the cowl, but no air cleaner. On the right is the big heat box from eBay...mounts some sort of air cleaner but does not fit the cowl.

I'd like to rebuild my plane to as original as possible, so the question is: should I use the little air scoop? is there some way to fit an air cleaner? Or should I bolt on the big carb heat box, and modify my cowl to fit?

I'm not an expert on this, but 'original' usually means no air filter. Neither of my T-crafts came with one.

Here is my intake. It may be from an Ercoupe, I've heard.

Large round intake with a long mesh screen coiled up and crammed into it.

The "scoop" type is the original design. It pokes through a hole in the lower cowl. It uses unfiltered air; there is a brass screen-type filter inside, but that will only keep out big objects.

The "Brackett" type is a later modification to the majority of Taylorcrafts, involving cutting a larger aperture in the lower cowl for the rectangular filter box to poke through.

If you wish to remain original, keep with what you have. If you do decide to update to the brackett-type, I will swap you a new unused brackett air filter assembly for your original air box.

I will accept your generous offer of a Brackett filter assembly in exchange for my original air scoop type carb heat box. My wife reminds me that some of the places we will be landing our Taylorcraft are prairie grass with quantities of dust, weeds and grasshoppers. I agree with her that we will need that filter out front!
