    Re: Fuel valve woes continue

Imperial quit production because of the John Denver crash, his family sued imperial so they quit making them. look at Mcmaster.com

hi Edwin, yeah I worte to Aviat because my hangar neighbor has a Pitts S-1 that uses the same exact valve as my Taylorcraft save the fact it has a newer red plastic handle...Aviat informed me they no longer sell the Imperial valve but made no mention of an Apollo valve..many thanks for the tip as it may come in handy yet....thanks again! Jeff,
The Service Bulletin is number 18. It calls out the Imperial to be replaced with an Apollo 76-101.
Some where back in my feeble brain I recall an Advisory Circular that provided information on substituting parts from different manufacturers that had the same functions.

Hey Edwin, thank you for the Apollo valve suggestion. I have been to their web site and indeed i see what i need...my old originals (plug type) have begun to drip ever so slowly from the handle, about 1 drop every 12 hours...i'm hoping the leather packing will swell and seal but not sure...any idea of a vendor who will sell me 2 of the Apollo valves? Apollo sells them in quantities of 10...GAD....many thanks!

              Jeff:
Try a google search for "Apollo 76-101"
It's a very common valve, lotsa dealers selling them for $47 or so. eBay is listing them at $6.99 used, reconditioned. I ordered one myself.

I forgot to mention the "fuel lube" I put it onto the leather and rub it in, kind of bees waxy stuff.... We have had an old can around for years... lt works by itself too!

Well, I think I am going to replace the valves with new units but certainly keep the old ones so I can work on them some more but continue flying...thanks for all the help and suggestions...some fuel lube may be just the thing to get them in top shape once and for all...ha

                    Jeff:

Let me/us know how your fuel valve replacement (apollo 76-101) goes. The right fuel valve is inop. as well as the right tank. the left is still OK but it drips when the tank is full (?)...it does not when half full (?).

                    Thanks

                    Ralph

Any suggestions on the log entry?

                      Re: Fuel valve woes continue

I believe that you guys are talking about replacements for the Imperial cone valves that are the same as used by the Cub folks and in the Luscombe airplanes.

Many years ago we did a minor change substitution with the FAA (full PMA FAA approval), for a ball valve that uses stainless steel on teflon, for the Luscombe 8 Series. With an adapter plate it is a direct replacement for the Imperial on-off valve, except that the rotation is opposite (diferent placard). I would think these could be approved easily for the application if anyone has an old parts manual with the imperial call out, or a sample valve to use for similarity comparisons & dimensional conformity.

Classic Aero has a copy of the FAA approvals, and the valves available with large or small handles- you choose. 480-650-0883
