  • Merged: Threads on Shinn brakes

    Hey guys,
I'm going to fly down there with the guy I bought the plane from if I can just get theese brakes figured out. I looked at the
brake cable routing, and the cable was running through both
pulleys on each side. Both cables had several "bends but not
quite kinks" in them. The "cam surfaces look horrible on both
of the "horseshoes". I think if I were to replace both the
cables, and both the horseshoes, I think maybe the brakes
just might work. Does anyone even know if the factory makes
the horseshoes, and if they do how much? I left the factory
an E-mail asking for a catalog and have heard nothing in about
a month. I REALLY want to be there guys. Sabrina

    Sabrina,
I haven't had any luck getting them to reply to emails, but they do answer phone calls. I ordered a POH from them, and am also having a set of fuel tanks built. Give them a call.

      Shinn Brakes (was: Wing tank)

      Hey all,
I just read Crispy Critter's posts on the mods to his wing
tanks due to leaks. I have the optional tank in my right wing,
and I wondered if it is mounted the same way, and therefore
should be watched for leaks. Any info? Thanks Sabrina

        Sabrina's brakes(or lack of brakes)

        Sabrina,
I think I might have an extra set of horse shoes and I have 3 or 4 different rolls of aircraft cable.I don't remember what size the brake cables are or how long they are but if you can tell me size and length then I'll try to get some out to you. Also,if I don't have those horse shoes I'm almost sure that Forrest does,if we can find them.I'm going up to see him the next pretty day we get and I'll check(that is if I don't have any extra). Is there anything else you might need while I'm looking.

            Factory phone number

            Sabrina,
            Factory phone is 1-800-217-1399.
Also, you were reading about Craigs tank problems in the F-21(21 gallon wing tanks). We people with the small 6 gallon tanks don't have hardly any trouble with ours. You shouldn't have anything to worry about with your wing tanks.

              Brie's brakes

              Thanks Kevin,
The retired TWA maintainance forman who is the IA at our airport looked at the brakes with me today and said that if I
replaced the horseshoes, and routed new cables that would probably take care of the problem. He looked Very closely at
the saddles that the horseshoes rode on, and he said that they
looked fine. he said that while my linings had some wear, they
were passable, that the shoes though worn a little on one side would work through the next one, possably two annuals all
depending on how hard I rode them. The one thing that he did
suggest though, was that I put new return springs on the shoes.
If you guys can put together a "care package" for my plane
name your price, i'll get it to you. But hold off on sending the
parts untill the first of the month when I get my retirement
              chech from Uncle Sam.
Thanks a million for all of your advice and assistance with
this problem. You guys are the salt of the Earth. Sabrina

Sebrina, The tank in yours (& mine) is not mounted with the same tabs. I don't know of any problems in that area.
However the tanks can still develop a leak. Very noticible when brown stains start forming on the fabric!
Mine was the joint around the outlet tube.
I cut a four inch opening in the fabric right under the tank outlet. Spread the cloth enough to brush, clean (MEK) and slap on some tank sealer (fuel proof, JB weld or equiv).
AP/IA was happy, I patched the fabric and went home.
No more leaks, this was about a year ago.

                  Fuel tank

Thanks Iktiller, I'm going to print your response and stick it
in a Taylorcraft Tech folder that I keep in my filing cabinet.

Well now I'm confused. I know CraigH posted some reports on leaks in the tank of his F21 model, but your BC model uses a totally different type of tank and method of attachment, so the problem will not arise in your BC. Your file does not need to retain a record of anything.

Now Crispy Critter (he of the Kevin Mays and Lightning fame) also has a similar model to you, so where do you make the connexion between him and fuel tank leaks?

                        Or am I missing something?

                          Fuel Tanks

The reason that I posted the question is that this is the first
and only Taylorcraft I have ever owned, and I was not sure if
the tank attach systems on the different models was the same or not. If they were the same, than that would be something that
I would have to watch out for. Seeing as my experience bace
with the Taylorcraft currently stands at zero, I'm going to ask
a LOT of questions some silly, some dumb, some unecessary,
but ALL vital if I'm not to make the STUPID error of not asking
                          the question. Sabrina

                            Sabrina:

I too went through the same learning curve (and I'm sure most here did too)

There are no silly, dumb or unnecessary questions...only those to which you have no answer.

Now that some of us have gained a little experience, we are here to help folk like you to learn the same.

                            So ask away!

Sabrina, can you post a picture of what you are looking at?

                              As an alternative,...

If all works out at the Gathering, and Forrest shows up, he has been known to make walk around inspections of airplanes and offer tips and suggestions (in a positive, loving sort of way) as to how you can improve your Tcraft for both basic maintenance and performance.

The last time he did when I was around, the price was just a thank you.
