  • ya think these are toast?

I am hoping to get a few more landings with these brake shoes. What do yawl think? Skybound still has no lead time on replacements. I am trying to figure out how to repair(weld on a new thin piece of steel) or make new shoes and transfer the end pieces over. Oh well, not going to keep me from flying. Anyone have a set for sale???

They don't look so good to me, Jason. Have you tried Univair (and even Aircraft Spruce)?

You could re-manufacture them as you describe...de-rivet the ends, make some new curved pieces, rivet the old ends on to these.

There's an ad in Trade a Plane under Taylorcraft misc for T-Craft brake linings, $57.50 per set including rivets. Looks like they fit brakes on Shinn or Firestone 606 (?) wheels. Aircraft & Engine Enterprises in Oklahoma 405-288-6778

Did your friend ever get those door handles I sent for his t-craft?You had better cherish them, they where the original inside door handles from Crispy....they lived through the great t-craft fire of 71' .

Don't know if it's applicable to your problem, Jason, but the April 2005 issue of Vintage magazine has an article about rebuilding the old Cleveland/Van Sickle mechanical drum brakes. No real information on parts sources, except a mention of Univair & their high prices, but it does state that Parker Hannifin Inc owns the Cleveland line of W&B's now. It also mentions that there's some good information at their website:

          Hope this helps.

Parker Hannafin's prices are obscene. Try $750 for a new torque plate. I posted pictures and info summer before last.

I vote for toast, I would not put them back for fear a fracture within those pitted areas might lock the wheel.

How much are they worth new or used to buy?

No one, not Univair - Spruce - Wag Aero, or Skybound has these brake shoes in stock. I would love to buy a set (4) from anyone who might have spares.

Re: ya think these are toast?

Jason, I finally looked at your link. So you have the Shinn brakes? These are the ones where the lining wraps around the drum, and shoes are bare steel, right?
You might check in with the Luscombe crowd, I know a lotta those have these Shinn brakes.Seems like it might not be too hard to find the parts you need at a salvage yard- but they might not be too much better than the ones you have.
Of course I haven't seen the whole part, but maybe fabricating new pieces would be the best bet. Seems like that would be well within your capabilities over there at Helio's-R-Us.

If you cant do it, (im sure you can), I bet a machine shop can do it. Make a new set.

Jason,I don't have the Shinn drawing but, I bet that they are made from 16 gauge cold roll steel. If you look at the way the system is made you'll see that there is no way the shoe can be deformed when assembled. I have found that the brakes work well if you bend the shoe so that it touches the drum it's full length. I have found a lot of them have been bent from mishandling during rebuild. Dick

We may also be able to assist with repairs to shoes if you can provide the shoes, backplate and wheel. We have a full fab shop and authority to return to service repaired, or certify PMA new parts.

see us at www.luscombe.org and www.luscombesilvaire.info, many parts interchangeable on Taylorcraft.

Shopping some of the old stuff can get very time consuming and/or expensive if you find it. You might also try wants on Ebay or barnstormers. MIght try Forrest too.
