  • Spars

In relation to the wing spars of Model BL12-65, I have information that front spar is 3/4" thickness and a width of 5-11/16", and rear spar is 5/8" thickness and 4-3/8" width.
Can any confirm me if this measures are correct?
    Thanks to all, tribe.-

    Re: Spars

I can only tell you what I did for my BC12D
    I ordered 3/4" x 5 3/4" nominal for the front spars and
    5/8" x 4 1/2" nominal for the rear spar

After sanding and urethane (4 coats) they ended up at those dimension +/- .030" or so. These were about the maximum size that would fit in the stamped ribs. You will have built up ribs but you could measure to see how much space you have in your ribs to get your upside dimensions.

        Re: Spars

I attached my order for spar stock when I did my BC12D. Notice that I changed the length to 196". Also I can't recall why I only ordered material for one rear spar.

p.s. oops! I forgot to say that I did not do any sanding or planing to the spar width or height

Spruce is about $10-$12 a foot for the size needed for a Talyorcraft, available from Aircraft Spruce and Wicks Aircraft, Stock sometime limited, You can also use Douglas Fur available in your area a lot cheaper, but need to find an A&P willing to accept that.

              Re: Spars

Look for a shop that specializes in wooden boat supplies... I've found quite a few of them that have beautiful spruce cants that they will custom mill from. Using the available Advisory Circulars, you can come up with some spar material. It's not just as simple as grabbing a board from Home Depot, but it isn't rocket science either.
