Wing Spars

Hi all!

Does anyone in the UK know if 'Aircraft Spruce' Wing spar blanks are certified for permit aircraft in the UK?

How much of the work would I be allowed to do to get them dimensioned and bored to match the existing?

I didn't realize that wood requires a permit, it either meets the spec or not here. You may need to get it oversized, varnished to seal the grain so there is not an issue with customs sending unsealed wood that may have pests in them. When you get the sealed spars home, plane, joint and then drill to fit. We have problems importing wood that MAY contain a parasite from many countries so we always sealed with varnish and then removing it by planning it away. Tim

Since my post I have discovered there are companies in the UK and Europe who already import Spruce, thus alleviating any personal import issues. Good news! Additionally, the aircraft I am now committing to purchase has good spars fitted, on wings that have been covered and signed off. Sadly with this aeroplane I will have to undo some of the good work because I wish to install the extra load carrying capacity mod which entails fitment of larger strut support bushes to the spars.

This is a wonderful learning curve for me, one which I am enjoying very much. Michael
