That is the original configuration. They didn't have air filters when first built. I have one of those in my parts box and always wanted to put it on because it makes the cowl so nice......but then, I would kind of like the engine to last too so I never have. I have seen a small filter on them that seems to work and keep trash out of the intake, but I am betting it reduced power a lot too.

Mine has no filter, its a '46 bc12d.

The filters have AD to comply with don't they?

I always pull carb heat on when I park so as to keep a prospective tenants out of the carb.

I am not sure the dirty air is a big factor for my operation. I am on grass or up in the sky or was on snow at one time.

The brief intervals on a dusty surface are a very small portion of my operation time.

Stuck valves, oil pump issues, rusty cylinders are more likely to mess you up IMHO.

Agree Drude. Ernie Bryant had the original intake with a small oil soak wire screen over eh end of the tube. Never seemed to have any problems.
