GoPro Video Camera Mounting

I received a GoPro video camera for Christmas and I am contemplating mounting options.

Even though the suction cup is rated to 200 mph I am hard-pressed to trust it. I would rather mount it out on the strut.

I have done some research on strut mounting but wanted to get other opinions as to how others have done it, if anyone has done so.

Well I stuck mine to the skylight and it stayed on up to 100 mph.

I also stuck it a Slingsby and it stayed on up to 100kts.

Ah, the problem is...no skylight. And, no Slingsby.

I think the view from the strut, with part of the forward end of the plane and sky, would be a good view.

I've seen some strut mounts, but they are aircraft specific or available over in the UK and are cost prohibitive. (Especially for what it consists of). What I need is a chunk of strut cross section so I can get a friend of mine to machine some nylon for me.

Is there available online a cross section of what the stock struts look like? Not sure where to start on that one.

Unfortunately, you'll find there are three or four different shapes of streamline tubing used by Taylorcraft.

Send a PM to DJ Vegh, he seems to have a fair amount of experience in this stuff. he will see this sooner or later but has not been here a lot lately. Look up DJ's profile, he makes a lot of his own stuff and has or had a mount available for this type of thing. A little pricey but it could swivel around and up and down by remote from the cockpit, all for video cameras. L

Easy way to determine exact profile of strut:

Pickup a profile guage from any good hardware outlet. I've found them at Sears, Home Depot, Lowes.

I know DJ has a lot of ways of doing it, but I don't need pan, tilt, etc. Just a good solid mount. There are a couple I have found on the internet, just need to adapt the idea for my aircraft. Part of the problem a lot of folks talk about is vibration in the mount, so it has to be good.

I have using the GOPRO HD for over 12 months now but do all my shooting from inside the cabin using the supplied suction mount. The reason that I have done it this way is that I had some reservations about despite the camera and mount being relatively small that it could effect the airflow over the aircraft and therefore effect the handling? It seems that I may be worrying unnecessarily about this going by Rob's results.

The problem about using it inside the cabin is that you pick up the prop rotations but not much you can do about that, However there is at least one camera on sale in the UK which is equally as small and gives at least one setting which illiminates the prop rotations.

Check out the Supercubs.org web site forum. I've been thinking about a GoPro camera and lurking on that site. There are a number of discussion threads about in-flight videos and mounting solutions. I've seen some fantastic videos shot from wings, struts, tail, landing gear, and inside the cabin. Also check out the videos that akbrew has posted here and on U-tube ... he has some great tcraft flying vids.

I have seen the mount that uses the 3m double sided tape used on a wing strut, it might peel some paint when you pull in off. I am going to try the helmet mount, the one with 2 cam straps, at some point on the wing strut.
