  • Rebuilding aileron questions.

My aileron needs new spars and im wondering how to pull the nails without denting the aluminium? Also wonder if i can use other wood than spruce? Fur? Im a long ways from aircraft supply. I will have a bad wing spar to rip down so have options.
    Thanks.

    Re: Rebuilding aileron questions.

Hello sibbeston, and welcome to the Taylorcraft forum.

I had to replace my aileron spars too. I used a tool like the one below to pull the nails.

My aileron spar replacement blog is here.

    Hope this helps,

    Rob

Doug Fir will do just fine for the spar. It's a bit heavier but way stronger. I used an old set of flush cutting nippers that I dulled just a bit, to pull nails.

I used both. The nips (side cutters) I took to the grinder and grind down until the cutting edge is flush with one side. If I cut off the head it was no problem as there is enough to grab after the aluminum is taken away. I actual have used this flush ground nippers for over 20 years for a variety of jobs. Used them so much I am on my second set, as I wore the first set out and you can not sharpen them. If you try all that happens is the metal is removed and they no longer close to grip anything. They also work well when working on old furniture and printed circuit boards.
