  • Tailwheel Problems L - 2A

    Hello Taylorcrafters!

It seems you guys have saved my bacon a few times in keeping my L - 2A flying! Thanks for the past advice!

Now, I'm in another one of those situations: the Tailwheel. I've sheared the bolt (#24 on Fig. 41; AN6 - 15) which holds the block through which the tailwheel fork/ vertical shaft rotates. This, the second time after about 10 hours). The main springs are a little flatter then they should be. I'd like to replace them but don't seem to be able to find a new set. The BC -12D rear springs set is very close to the same size but a bit thicker - at least the ones that are on a BC-12 next to mine in the hangar. The front retaining bolt (28) is shorter but the same size as the L-2 one, while the rear retaining bolt (24) is only 3/8inches diameter on the BC-12. I'd guess that means they are not a direct swap. How about the thickness of the spring pads(#27 & 30)? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

I expect that some of the holes in the spring for that bolt are oval (not round).

    Am I correct?

Bolt could be shearing because all the holes are round.

How many hours did it take for the first bolt to shear?

    Dave

p.s. I have no idea what figure you are referring to, maybe others will know.

can you send some photos of what you are working with. The figure is on the L2 disks.

Sounds like the wrong spring configuration. If you don't have some "play" for the springs to slide over each other when flexed you have a VERY EFFICIENT bolt shearing tool. There should either be oval holes in some of the springs or two should only be bolted on one end. The single end bolt configuration is in the photo.

Also note the safety wire "mouse" on the steering spring. Really helps keep you from those embarrassing ground loops when a spring comes loose!

Went threw the L2 disks and the photo of hanks tail wheel is the same as the drawings in the l2 files also there is a sleeve also on drawing d 1215 and the springs are b562 b563 b564 witch are the same as a bc12d Univair has them.
