The verbage below is straight from the AC on ICA, see link below. Also attached is a copy of a mod I did to my plane showing the use of ICA on the second page of the 337.
2. Purpose of ICA. ICA provide a way to keep products airworthy. ICA provide documentation of recommended methods, inspections, processes, and procedures. The ICA must contain information on each item or part, as appropriate, installed on the product.
Its to force mechanics to treat major modifications by field approval the same as you would an STC. They both have the same requirements now so owners/mechanics know if there is anything special in the realm of maintenance. Tim
Most every one I've done has some space filler like "Inspect at annual", "No serviceable components. Replace if failed." or my favorite... "Clean screen with moist cloth." They make you fill in the blank even if it's common sense/practice.
