  • Lycoming 0-235-L2C Engine F22A

    Hi Guys,

As I mentioned in the Rigging thread I have a F22A with the above engine fitted which is due a 400 hr check (the first one from new! ) in about 38 hours time. The aircraft was layed up for several years for various reasons hence the low hours. The check is as a result of a Lycoming Service bulletin which apparently applies to all 300 series engines and consists of removing the rocker covers , releasing the valve gear and then measuring the "play" in the valve guides / stems with a dial guage. If within limits ok but if outside the minimum requirement ( providing they don't find anything else!) is new guides and a set of exhaust valves and parting with a lot of dosh!

Doe's anyone know the likely failure rate for these checks? I am being told by one licensed engineer that in his experience "most if not all fail" I cannot personally beleive this as these series engines were fitted to the Cesna 150 / 152 / 172? series and I can't beleive that flying schools would have stuck with them for so many years if that was the case? would the laid up state be likely to have any effect on likely failure?

    Regards,

I have not read that SB, but you don't have a 300 series engine, nor due you have hydraulic lifters, so it should not apply. I would need to read the SB to give you a proper and more specific answer.

Robert, I am not qualified to give an opinion, but am suspicious of the need to do that inspection. Hopefully you will get some good info here. But If it were me I would read the Service Bulletin myself and double check the model and serial numbers of my engine.

          Hi Guys,

It was my mistake probably talking about the 300 series engine but I have been told by an engineer that this inspection relates to my aircraft as well but will certainly do as you suggest and check. As you have probably gathered I am a novice when it comes to aircraft ownership so could you advise how I get access to this service bulletin? would it be via the Lycoming web site or elsewhere?

          Regards Bob P.

This web site should be of value if you have not already found it yourself.
Good on you for being a conscientious owner.
It is indeed a PITA to replace valve guides. I hope you don't have to go through that pain.

              Mark,

Thanks that is very useful. unfortunately or fortunately as the case may be the check does relate to my engine! however I have 38 hours to go to the 400 hr deadline and what with the current weather in the UK it will probably take a while to get there. That's providing I manage to get it signed off after the wing removal for the tank repair coupled with the Star 3 yearly inspection! no more financial pain please!
