Re: Lycoming O-145 Hot Starting
When you shut it down hot, turn the gas off,let it run about 10 seconds or so at about 600 rpm's then lock your throttle at 600rpm's and kill it with the mag switch. When you go to restart do not touch anything, simply turn on the gas, turn on the mags and crank her up. She should fire right up on the 1st,2nd,or 3rd blade. This worked well on the Cub before we swapped the 0145 for a continental. It also works great on a friends Chief.Kevin Mays

Re: Lycoming O-145 Hot Starting
Mike, when I had the airplane I learned how to start it hot. What Kevin said is very good info. When I was on the road I would get some one to hold the airplane for me so I could prop it. I learned not to let other people try. When it is hot you can NOT pull it through lazy like when it is cold. Grab the prop inside of the stickers (not at the tip) and give it a very quick pull. Blade speed is everything. If it runs a little then quits you have 2 options. One is wait a while and try again. The other is if you have a qualified person in the airplane open the throttle about 1/2 and prop it until it starts. Option 1 is the easiest. After I learned how to start it I had no fear of hot starts, but I always propped it myself. Tom Baker

Re: Lycoming O-145 Hot Starting
Exactly , blade speed is the answer, like my Dad used to say ; WHIP it through, I could get 2 1/2 to 3 revolutions on the old PA-15 Lyc when I was a young man, grab her in close and "whip" it. Don't pull her through, just call "Contact" and do it.Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc
