  • Increasing horsepower on a-65

My neighbor had a T-Craft 50 years ago and he was telling me that he though that we could increase our H.P. by a jet change in the carb. Does anyone know about this and if so, what do we do? We are doing our annual late this month and I would like to consider this change.

Hi Bob, Search on words like 'a-65 to 75 hp' you'll find lots of info. Howard

Legally there is no modification by changing jets, you can build a 75 from a 65 if you follow the continental instructions. You then have to get the engine legal for the airframe. The Bowers Flybaby site and Harry Fenton has most of the information about the engines but your mechanic will need to get it legal if you do decide to perform the modificaitons. Tim

A jet change alone may not help hp much.
I think you need to go to a larger venture along with the jet change to relize any gain.

The A-65, 75, and 80 all use the same 1 1/4" venturi per the type certificate. It is more of a change of timing and an RPM increase. There is a requirement to drill the rods for an oil spurt hole and the piston is different on the 80 (much heavier too) and depending on what manual you get the 65 and 75 pistons can be the same or different. I have found that most 65's also have the oil spurt hole put in them when a previous overhaul was performed. It is supposed to help lubricat and cool the engine. The C-75 and 85 engines have a larger spider, different bore, different venturi, cam, etc. Much different than the A series engines. Tim
