  • Oil Pump A65

Anyone ever had an A-65 engine need to have the oil pump primed after prolonged periods of inactavity? Looking at one that needs it primed after sitting 4-6 weeks at a time. Once primed it holds 50 psi cold and 40 psi warm. I am thinking worst case it needs the accy. case and gears overhauled. I have extra of both lying around.

You have to love Google- I found some references to the problem- it is probably what I thought- gears and a case that is a bit worn. I found where Hank J. was having the same problem a while back- wonder how he ever fixed it?

This is a common illness. Some have told me they turn the prop and raise the tail untill the nose touches the ground. I just remove the temp bulb and pump a little oil into the strainer. That will seal the gears. It usually has to sit for some time before this is a problem.

My original fix was to sit the tail wheel on a stand when she was in the hangar. It wasn't originally to fix the oil problem, it was because the crummy hangar I was in flodded every time it rained so I started putting the mains on ramps and the tail on a little stand (I like greasing my wheel bearings, but not after EVERY rain!). A side effect of the "level attitude" storage was the oil pressure was always up when she started. I will probably keep the stand under the tail even though my baby is now in a clean, well lighted twin hangar and out of the swamp lands (and the rent is about $50 less per month too!)

Yes my old engine need to be primed all the time after ca 3 day or sometime less. 7 to 8 blades is was ok most of the time. A Cold winterday32
deg F and 100 oil it could take 10 20 sec. before the oilpressure came up.
My crank was .006 of round. the pump was ok I am using it in my "new" 600 hr engine.

            Go to http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/fenton.htm

Harry Fenton has a lot of info on small cont engines.

Yes I have that problem too if the T-Craft sits for any extended period of time ( a month or more). Have tried the lifting of the tail while engine running but never worked for me. I just do like the others and remove the temp bulb and squirt some oil into the hole, that works for me. Pain iun the

An "Old Timer" told me to add a half quart of Marvel's Mystery oil and run the engine for about 10 minutes prior to an oil change. After changing the oil add another half quart of Marvel's and run the engine again. He claims that should fix the problem. I followed his instructions and it seems to work. Although, admittedly, my plane hasn't sat that long since I changed the oil. Be interesting to see how it works over the winter.
