Re: 0-200 A in bc12d stc owner
My company is the holder of the STC # SA1-210 for installing a C85 (85 horsepower). For those wishing to install an O-200 or C90, I can help. I have issued DER approvals for this on several Taylorcrafts as a piggy-back on top of the SA1-210 STC. To do this, we have to limit the RPM so as to de-rate the engine back to 85 horsepower. This has been satisfactory for many. Cost is the STC price $400 plus DER approval paperwork and a "deviation" spec. drawing for $250. The gross weight increase paperwork adds another $150. Total is $800 for all. See links below.Terry Bowden, formerly TF # 351

Taylormat,
It is because the expense to certify for 100 hp is so great. Additional structural analyses, flight testing, inspections, and other certification work is required under FAA requirements.Terry Bowden, formerly TF # 351

Re: 0-200 A in bc12d stc owner
I have the impression from reading various discussions, both here and in other Forums, that there is a tolerance allowed in maximum horsepower. I've seen figures up to +10% mentioned...a confirmation of any legal increase from Terry the DER and C-85 STC holder would be best.
Two other STC's allow modifying the C-85 into an engine similar to the 0-200 displacement/compression-wise using some 0-200 parts, but with a different camshaft, lifter bodies, and carburetor P/N. They reportedly can fall within the +10% limit.
I have a C-85 that has been modified and it performs well. It'll pull a static +rpm over the fresh C-90 I had with the same prop installed. That rpm data was generated via accurate outboard equipment. Despite the mod both static and maximum rpm are limited to TCDS specs and the tach placarded to the C-85's original 2575.
A direct changeout to an 0-200 may be placarded differently and employ an appropriate propeller.
