  • Wing tanks for experimental

I still haven't given up on my clipwing project.......yet (although have considered it), but looking at options for fuel tanks. I may use a nose tank like Eric's, but was wondering if anyone has built a large wing tank (maybe fiberglass) that would hold 10-15 gal? And if so, how could that be done with the drag wires running through it? I know the F21's have a 20gal tank but not sure how they do it. From the pics I've seen on this forum, I can't tell if it has the wires through it or not.

    Thanks for any input.

I am using two modified C-150 tanks in my Clip. You will need to add the through-tubes for the wires.....Marcus

Greg- I'm running the numbers now on some 10 gallon wing tanks. They will have no wires going through them- the first set of drag wires will start just outboard of the tanks. These are for my wood leading edge clipwing- I do not think they would work on a aluminum LE due to the reduction in strength.

I looked at a neat project the other day that used this similar system and a 2 gallon header with a flop tube. I'll most likely go this route now to keep the weight out of the nose. Some of the older stuff with wing tanks utilized this same method. Sure makes the construction easier.

If you do not run wires in the tank bay, you will have to structurally box the area some other way. THere is several ways it can be done

With todays fuel sitiuation is it wise to go with Figerglass and resin?
