Re: Drag wires for a clipwing

Guys- Just got back from teh local Harley Davidson dealer. . . . . ordered a set of 40 new stainless spoke nipples in 6-40 thread size for $33. They also have them in Chrome ;-)

Now to have the wires built.

Might want to steer away from the Chrome ones. Hydrogen embrittlement is a long standing problem in Chrome plating that causes parts to crack without warning. Since they are available in SS you might as well avoid an additional failure mode by using the SS. Besides, who needs pretty chrome nipples that are sealed up in a wing where no one can see them.

Has anyone pulled a few of the motorcycle nipples to see what their ultimate strength is?

That is why I went with Stainless. . . . . .the thread size is 10-32, they are a good bit larger than stock. I'm sure they are plenty strong. I'm going to have to ream the compression struts to 5/16 because the body of these new ones are .281.

Forrest- What is the thread size on the D model nipples? 8-32?
The Harley ones are 10-32 and I think they are a bit overkill. I haven't had my wires made yet. I have a set of BC12-D ones to trade out if you need them. For the clipwing I need 32.

Re: Drag wires for a clipwing

Thank you Ron , that is correct, the D system is much heavier, I like it!
The feet on the compression tubes are larger too. same spacings.
Ron thank you for the CD offer I will be going over all this with Bob & Rob and we will decide how to do this thing. The www.taylorcraft.org is switching over to The Taylorcraft Foundation exclusively and we will post more information directly upon the WEB SITE.

Forrest- How much for a set of 10-32 nipples. . . . I need 36 for the clipwing. (just in case the HD version doesn't work.)
