2 More questions for the clip-wing group......
      1. Has anyone tried a Swick conversion w/O-200 with a starter? How does it handle the extra weight and balance w/longer nose, etc.
      2. Has anyone tried aileraon gap seals on a clip-wing?

        Re: Clip-Wing Taylorcrafts B models

Jim- The 0-200 is really effective when kept light. I would only do the 0-200 if I kept the short mount, stock cowl and no electric.

As for the gap seals- they are frise type ailerons and gap seals will slow the roll rate. There is supposed to be airflow between the aileron and cove- it is the way it is designed.

            Re: Clip-Wing Taylorcrafts B models

Now that I am back again in Dec. 2005 and checking back on my Clip Taylorcraft threads , I see there IS some interest. I suggest the newbies back up and read all they can first then jump in. My experience has been with Duane Cole's ship a 1938 50 hp Taylorcraft that was built by Johnny Vasey for himself and later sold to Duane Cole for $995.00. THEN Duane did a bit of modification, drew plans and sold them. WE have a set here at the Foundation of course. There were many clips done around the country and I am trying to list them by N Number & original owner, any information is welcome with dates and events. Then Swick did his thing with many slight variations ; wood, metal, length of wing from maybe 24 to 29...There were three F-19's made into clips right from the factory by a fellow out in Kansas. Yes, 0-200 engines. I have flown 5 different variations and liked them ALL they each had good & bad points. I do like to keep it light and simple; BUT like Roscoe Turner used to say, nothing beats horsepower. I too like wood spars. As to being too light and being too fast then we may have a problem. Duane Cole broke all the ribs aft of the front spar doing a square loop. These were pre-war ribs of course. I pulled the complete leading edges loose on "Leisa Marie" ( see beginning of this thread) doing a "push" out of a vertical at about 140 mph down ; 170 across the bottom.Ya live and ya learn! We changed the Swick method of attaching the leading edges and a couple of other things too! got to go to a party more soon

Out of curiosity, what was that like? Did you know right away? Did flight characteristics change, was there an offending noise?

I would rather live vicariously through others on stuff like this.......

                Re: Clip-Wing Taylorcrafts B models

Forrest- I too collapsed the leading edge. Mine did it at around 160-170 and a 4g pull- seems like I was trying to get an extra 1/2 roll on an upline- stupid pilot tricks. . . . . I know of 2 others that did the same thing- both landed safely. I did feel it happen and immediately came off the throttle, landed and had to fix it. Mine only collapsed a small area just outboard of the strut fitting.

Collapsed leading egdes will happen if you do not double up on nose ribs with the bigger lycoming conversions. The C90 and 0-200 powered birds seem to be a little light on speed to do it. I have pulled as much as 6G with no problems at normal speeds. I think it is only a problem at the higher speeds.

If anyone wants to use the wood ribs I have a good source for wood leading edges. The only way you will collapse a wood leading edge is hit the ground. If you still want aluminum make sure you use .020 and take it back to the spar, double up on false nose ribs.

On the Ritchie clipwing we just finished all the diagonal braces on the front end of the ribs (pre-war) were bent. We added a extra diagonal to make it a cross brace. Tom

To answer the last three quickly, yes there was a loud bang noise, a change in pitch attitude, a feel in the stick and the throttle was already back but I pulled to make sure, then I pitched UP , forward pressure, Slowed down and gently rolled , played with the new stall speed and safely landed back at Barber. IAC site was at Miller Airport. The extra cross brace was added at one point , I have a few new nose ribs with it in place. Eric & I must get together more often to compare notes.

How does one obtain the plans for a Swick conversion?
