  • Ultimately, the B-17 needs this modification or something very similar to be safe. The turbochargers are not supported logistically and they are known to crack from heat and stress. A cracked turbocharger can (and has) caused extensive damage to the nacelle in which are oil tanks, control cables and wiring. The turbos are not needed for performance because the aircraft is not flown above 10,000 feet and it is never loaded anywhere near its combat gross weight; in fact, the prototype B-17 flew without turbochargers installed.

    If you could assist these folks by interpreting the regulations and liaison with Mr Stahl, it would be a huge help. I know that if you must conduct any engineering tests or travel to Houston that you can't be expected to work for free, so once you define a pathway forward I expect the CAF will discuss expenses with you as is fair and proper.
