  • Ben Mauro tribute

Bruce and I received the following from daughter of Ben Mauro today :
    Forrest Barber, & Bruce Bixler:

My name is Marilyn Mauro and I am the daughter of Ben Mauro, who manufactured Taylorcraft airplanes in Conway, PA back in the 1950’s. I just wanted to let people know in the Taylorcraft organization of his passing. He died yesterday at the age of 87 after contracting pneumonia on Friday, December 16th. He had been a resident of the Valley Care Masonic Village for the last seven years, and was bedridden, not being able to walk or talk (but perfectly healthy & fairly coherent otherwise – tough man!!!) for the last two of those years. I am just glad he is at peace now.

The funeral arrangements are on Wednesday, December 28th from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Richard D. Cole Funeral Home, 328 Beaver Street, Sewickley, PA 15143 (412.741.4334), with his funeral being the following morning, probably around 11 am.
Should anybody wish to contact me, I can be reached at my home address / number as follows:
    Marilyn J. Mauro
    150 Bradley Lane
    Sewickley, PA 15143
    (412.741.5665)
    My cell phone is 724.612.1399.
Bruce, "Duke" Iden & myself are planning to go to the calling hours in the afternoon. I will try to fly over the Internment. Ben of course is documented in the "Taylorcraft Story" by Chet Peek. Please add any knowledge you have of Ben and I will follow up with my thoughts. Ben was honored for his help to save Taylorcraft back in 1947 thru 1956 at A Taylorcraft Old-Timers award banquet here in Alliance about 10 years ago.

    Re: Ben Mauro tribute

Just got off phone with Marilyn Mauro , we had a wonderful chat about the family, she has brother Jim and they have visited here to Alliance in the past. Bruce & I are sending memorial tribute to the Funeral home in behalf of the Taylorcraft Foundation and the Taylorcraft Owner's Club. Duke, Bruce & I are leaving Alliance Wed about 11:30 to go to the calling hours. Marilyn will receive a copy of "The Taylorcraft Story" by Chet Peek. Please add to this thread about Ben.

Forrest, If Mr. Mauro was involved in anyway in the creation of my 1947 Taylorcraft, I would like to express my appreciation to his daughter. The opportunity to have and use "07 Mike" for nearly 30 years here in Alaska has been a wonderful experience. Dick

Just talked with Marilyn Mauro, 'Duke" , Bruce & I will have quite a ride over tomorrow. Many memories for me, I recall my Dad going over to do the tests on the Model 20 on floats in the river by Pittsburg. I have many memories of the plant at Conway & Connelsville. will come back with a good report.

Forrest, It almost brings a rear to my eye to think of those places you mention when speaking about areas around Pittsburgh PA. You see I grew up there (North Hills area) ) for the first 18 years of my life before heading to South Carolina for College and to live . Sewickley, Connellsville, Conway, Butler (I remember Ken Scholler when my Dad and I would fly in there in our T craft)..

Gosh we have lost so many of these great folks in the last several years. Its really tough some times to see time going by so quickly. That said we all need to fly our Ts more and think of the history even more!

Thanks Forrest for heading over there for us. I look forward to hearing your report.
