Taylorcraft to Relocate In Brownsville, Texas

Taylorcraft Aviation will move all operations to Brownsville, Texas on or before June 1, 2005. All manufacturing labor will be out sourced. Taylorcaft will still control the quality and inspection processes to guarantee all parts meet FAA standards. This process will be under direct supervision of the FAA San Antonio MIDO.

Why Brownsville? A work force of over 1 million people, 263,000 Sq. Ft. facility on the airport property, commercial airline service to our door, state of the art painting facility, free trade zone, and deep water port and rich in aviation history.

Bottom line is over 200 people will be dedicated to manufacturing of Taylorcraft parts, 60 people dedicated to new aircraft assembly and 25 people dedicated to restoration paint and fabric.

Unfortunately, we will have to reschedule our factory fly-in until we are settled in and we plan to fly the new Taylorsport ASAP.

As of today Taylorcraft Aviation will start a nation wide search for: Experienced - Quality Manager, Engineer, Plant Manager and FAA-DER

This transition will not be easy; however, it is the only way we can get our product to our customers.

Thank you Harry , this all makes sense to me. WE appreciate you keeping the Taylorcraft "nation" informed at all times.... I of course will offer any of my information and help to make this go.
I published what I believe is the way to build things about two years ago after being associated with four different managements since Taylorcraft left Alliance where we built 152 airplanes and a whole lot of PARTS......I worked every day with the D.M.I.R. , the engineers, and Mr. & Mrs. Feris as a Flight test D.E.R. ( Production & Experimental) and doing the Final Inspection.
LETS do it!!

I will post my thoughts from Feb. 2003 next post and lets see if this can work this time.... I can fly in direct on the Big silver Bird to the new location.

I am posting my thoughts from Feb 2003 when we first discussed the operation in LaGrange . It took Charlie & Dorothy 4 yrs starting with practically nothing to produce the first Production ship.
There are no short cuts , build the prototype , test it , tweak it, and then go to the Production ships. WE actually had 4 ships as Production ships while the FAA checked each one until the conformity ship was built , tested and turned over to the new Owner with the factory DMIR signing her off. I totally understand Prouction certificates too....WE tried that , did not work back then. check the attachments::
I am not being a wise guy and not saying I told you so... I only want to get parts first and airplanes second.... I merely am stating the facts as I saw them at that time. Check the attachments that were published in the newsletter and sent to the factroy at that time...

I'm a little confused. "All manufacturing labor will be out sourced" What's that mean? It sounds like Taylorcraft will NOT be MAKING airplanes, just inspecting and selling airplanes. Right?

But then: "over 200 people will be dedicated to manufacturing" So, are those 200 people "out sourced" people? If so, where are they? In Brownsville? Mexico? China?

Forrest, Ditto The factory set up you describe in your attachment makes all the sence in the world. Dorthy and you guys mapped it out well for the guys in PA. Shame they did not listen or try it that way anyway. Revenue in the door NOW is what drives a successfull enterprise. I started my own business in building two years ago and can tell you for a fact that ANYTIME I take time out for future plans and drop the day to day bread and butter ...lookout. Its fun to think about all the glamor of what can be but gravity dictates one keeps the ball moving right now no mattter how ugly the job at hand is.

From what I read in this discussion group, it appears that there is a significant business to be had just making and selling replacement parts. Building complete airplanes can and should be secondary to this, since there are thousands of airplanes already existing that need parts.

This raises a separate question.

It is possible (and reasonably common) for someone OTHER than the type certificate holder to manufacture PMA parts in support of a design.

SO..... if existing airplane owners need parts, and it is possible to make parts under a PMA, then WHY is nobody making the hard to find parts? Univair should be in a position to do so. Can't they make cowlings, or landing gears, or whatever the most needed parts are? If everyone is up in arms about Taylorcraft 2005 not making parts, then why can't the Foundation make parts under a PMA? Isn't this what the Luscombe people did with some success?

Good idea.... Univair, Safe-Aire Repair (was) , and now Wag-Aero are doing just that. Don't get me started on the Luscombe Foundation!!! There have been too many law suits in this business of parts....

Our Taylorcraft Foundation was not set up to go into business producing parts; BUT I will support anyone who wants to try it. At the Moment ; The Taylorcraft Factory in Brownsville, Tx. & Wag-Aero along with Dawley Aviation seem to be our best hope... Another problem is that the folks that have set up to PMA parts seem to want to make a PROFIT!! Boy that is a unique idea in Aviation. Sooooo the initial investment is real high and some folks want to make it up too quickly. I am hoping the move will do it; Lets see!!
