  • Rob Lees-who is Lucas?

    Rob,

    Remember I bought an old Austin Mini a few years back.

    Today I went to drive it, and the damn thing wouldn't start. The ignition coil is really hot and has a weak output, the starter solenoid just clicks-won't make contact, and the distributor cap has a broken center post.

    Each of these defective parts says LUCAS on them. Who is that rotten SOB anyway?

      You beat me to it by 10 minutes. I have friends with ""Prince of Darkness" T-shirts.

      Lucas is also the manufacturer of British refrigerators, which of course is why they drink warm beer...

        True Story -- every bit of it.
        From the cockpit of a 68MGB with Lucas electrics -
        On my way to the airport one frosty dull November Morning, it was well before sunrise and this heavy overcast would keep this an extra dark day. Zipping along at 60 in a 55mph zone, I wasn't too worried about Colorado Highway Patrol crusier about a half mile ahead. Typically Colorado is lienent on such things. However, instinctively I relieved a bit of pressure on my gas pedal... which inexplicably started my headlights flickering. Seeing this I re-pressed the pedal and picked up both speed and light.

        About 50 feet away from the patrol car my headlights went completely dead and the officer face whipped around expressing disbelief as I shot by. When he pulled me over and asked me how fast I thought I was going, I told him the story of the Lucas Electric MG seemingly turning me in, making me go faster than I wanted and then making my little car's headlights go dark. The officer stated, "Yeah, I was kinda on a break for a moment catching up on paper work. I never would've noticed your speed if you hadn't blinked your lights. Thanks for your assistance." Prince of Darkness is certainly an apt and appropiate monnicker for Lucas.
        With regards;

          I used to own a 65 Austin Healey. I loved the car, lots of fun to tinker on, but the positive earth electric system (Lucas) was a nightmare.

            Stay away from Hawkers. Plus you have to learn the Queens English to work on them. Tyres (tires) torch (flashlight) spigots and cocks (valves) spanners
            (wrenches) the list goes on and on. "Hand me a Wentworth spanner and a torch so I can get this cock off."
            Who says you can't loose all three inverters in flight?
