Katrina is coming to visit us tomorrow morning. At this time (06:00 CST) looks as tho it will hit New Orleans and the lower part of the state ie: Grand Isle; this is where Vic Gisclair lives. Will give him a call later. I live about 90 miles west of the City but on the Gulf (about 5 miles ). So far plan on staying. Flew yesterday, pushed her back in my hangar, tied the duck down. She didn't like that. Enjoys her freedom. Closed and locked the doors. Now just waiting. Hopefully we will be spared one more time. This is the price we pay for living in this great part of the country.

            Re: Katrina

Katrina is passing as I write; however here in New Iberia, we missed the bullet. It went to the east of us. And, that is a good thing. Here we are having lots of rain and light winds. 35-50 mph but not sustained.

Vic is not as lucky. The brunt of the storm went pretty close to his home. Don't know yet how bad. His hangar and his airplanes (3) are there also. He and his family went North. Spoke with him last night, but haven't heard from him today yet.

I spoke with Vic last evening (Monday) . He lost the roof on his home and his garage, plus his wife's green house. The hangar and airplanes are okay. He will call and tell me more as he get everything sorted out.

                          Re: Katrina

Thanks Bob. We are okay here and have taken in friends from the New Orleans area in at our home. Texas is doing a great job of taking in thousands of people. Also here our community has taken in several thousand also. On a personal note, we have one family here at our home and a couple of other families in rental units we have.

I can not imagine the difficulity these people are and will have. They have lost everything. Homes, all their personal possessions, many do not even have jobs any longer.

It will take years before everything is back to some kind of normalicy. New Orleans is still under water, and the Mississippi and Alabamy Coast is in ruins. Much like a way zone.

And, the Federal and State government sat on their asses, looks like forever before doing what was necessary. It wasn't like anyone didn't know what would happen. We have been speaking about this for years. Oh well we must all live with the hand dealt and do the best we can.

This part is very puzzling; NPR points out when 9/11 occurred in the midst of all that, there was hope/pride. That seems to be missing in NO. Wonder if it was because 3 days elapsed before either state/US govt became visible.

Another thing, why are three presidents pushing for donations? Isn't that what our tax dollars are for? - Mike

                              Re: Katrina

I agree also. More money is not the answer here. They have already screwed up things. But remember 911. The Red Cross collected million of dollars and only a very small portion went to 911 they put it into their coffer for "future" needs ???

There will be plenty enough money. What the people needed was to be removed and have some place to go.

I think a "tent city" would have been better than the domes' or convention centers or anyplace that they are all crowed into. Its terrible. WE help the world and spit on our own people.

People have been dieing, and left on the sides. Help has come too late for many of these people. Most of these are the poorest of the poor. No money, no home, no autos, nothing ! And now they have less than nothing, not even diginity. No toilet facilities, no shower or baths, no clean clothes. NOTHING !!!

They do need help, but I am sorry. I don't believe the "Red Cross" is the way. We usually give to the Salvation Army. Altho, I don't know if they are any better. We try to help individuals if possible. But here it is so massive, I don't know where to begin. It is very bad. It will take years to recover.

Need to get off my soap box. I hate politicians, with nothing but excuses and reason why something couldn't or wasn't done.
